What Is Organizational Structure? Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 269

Essay

My total score on the questionnaire is 33 which clearly indicate my preference for an organic structure. In other words, I prefer relatively newer organizational structures which challenge the traditional mechanistic organizational structures.

I prefer organic structure because I do not want a job where I have limited scope for creativity and innovation since my responsibilities have been paid out to me by my superiors. I also do not believe in departmentalization because they inhibit the free flow of communication and also limit interaction among different employee groups. The departments sometimes pursue their own interests at the cost of the overall organizational interests and lot of resources and time is wasted in internal politics. Instead, I believe people from different background should increasingly work together because not only it will result in greater operating efficiency but also improved products and services for the clients.

I also prefer organic structures because I feel they respond better to changes in the external environment. The pace of change has increased and mechanistic organizational structures slow down the pace of change. I read story of Microsoft’s early days and one of the reasons it gained edge over IBM was due to its organic structure which was quite a contrast to IBM’s mechanistic structure.

My preference for organic structure is also driven by the belief one’s performance and not rank should determine his/her compensation. When one’s performance and not rank determines his compensation, the incentive to work harder is greater. I would love high job security but I feel job security has declined as compared to the past and would continue to do so in the future.
