The Childbirth Connection (2012) is attempting to answer the question many health care professionals might be asking: why is almost every third woman giving birth with Cesarian section. The authors talk to policymakers and health care workers to highlight the discrepancies in the U.S. system and promote an evidence-based approach to childbirth.

The authors (Childbirth Connection, 2012) review statistical data and state that hospitals and health care workers are responsible for the high rate of Cesarian section (32.8%). While the recommended level is between 5 and 10 percent, many women are having the complicated and risky operation instead of vaginal birth.

The main reasons why many women are unable give birth the traditional way are analyzed and summarized by the author, based on relevant literature review. Health care providers are unable to adequately inform women about their options, they do not prepare pregnant patients for physiologic labor, and use interventions during natural childbirth that increase the likelihood of needing a Cesarian section. Early epidural and labor induction can decrease women’s ability to actively take part in the natural birth process. Further, care providers do not consider the risks of Cesarian section, even though it is considered to be a major surgery, can result in complication and longer recovery time.

The authors of the study (Childbirth Connection, 2012) created a comprehensive and thorough review of the high Cesarian rates in America. The article is believable and professionally written, using an evidence-based approach, and analyzing the results of a large scale survey (Listening to Mothers).

It is important that natal nurses are aware of the risks of offering Cesarian, discuss options with mothers prior to childbirth, and prepare them for vaginal labor. I believe that the article has made me understand the importance of using evidence-based approach in my practice while keeping mothers’ interest in mind. I would recommend every health care professional to consider the findings of the article in their practice.
