Application Essay

What is it about Yale that has led you to apply?

Yale University is an exemplary institution that permits its learners to access its great lectures and extraordinary learning resources. The institution residential college system provides some calmness and social environment, which is ideal for learning, and this makes me keen to join Yale University since the institution hardly restricts individual mind but instead the institution embraces accord. Also, I find the institution’s residential college system to be a unique feature of Yale University since it permits learners to experience the coherence and closeness of small colleges while still relishing the traditional and academic resources of Yale University.

Why do these areas appeal to you?

I am interested in studying various subjects, including economics, computer science, and even urban studies. Economics is one of the courses that I initially studied as a unit. I gained much interest in it because it will help me think strategically and make decisions that optimize the outcome in the marketplace. Also, the course will enable me to develop analytical and critical thinking skills that will open for me diverse career opportunities. Similarly, computer science will help me understand how to deal with complex problems. With the course, I will be able to impact the world positively. Urban studies, on the other hand, will help me to impact many people because it will help me to be a forward-thinking and innovative individual. I am interested in the three courses because they allow me to help solve varying kinds of challenges in society, which is what fulfills me.

What inspires me every day is to be able to solve complex situations in society. Some of the days that I have been the most fulfilled were when there was a complex situation in the society.

If I was teaching a new course, it would be resilient design. The resilient design would involve all the students at Yale University to better manage the challenges that they encounter, especially when they go to the workplace.

One of the people that I would host is Michelle Obama. I would invite Michelle Obama to speak to the students about being valuable leaders in society. I would invite Michelle Obama because she is an all-rounded leader.

From my experience working in community development, I learned that one is always striving to do better. Initially, I would feel I was not accomplishing enough, and I was not proud of my work.

One of the things that’s pretty interesting to me is community development. There are so many ways our activities can impact our communities. Community development ensures that the citizens are happier, healthier, richer, and able to live to their fullness. In regards to this am always interested in any activity that involves solving problems such as hacking, congestion, or even more social things such as helping the most vulnerable people in society. Recently, I was engaged in an organization that deals with helping the vulnerable girls in African countries aged 10-24 years with mentoring and even provision of essential to make sure that they are always in school.

I am drawn to community development because it helps solve society’s biggest problems. For instance, when more people have been educated, the rates of unemployment to go down, and thus there is a reduction of crime in society. Community development does not deal with solving the problem, but it is essential in reducing them, and it also provides opportunities for growth for people in the society. With community development, the community members are stronger and more connected. At Yale, I would be interested in engaging in a conversation such as community development with other students or even instructors who are also passionate about the topic. The engagement in such a vibrant conversation would be vital in ensuring that as a student, I learn more, and I can also share the ideas that I have with the rest of the team.

One of the things that have given me great satisfaction is a certificate I received on community development. I began working with a group of girls aged 10-24 years. Most of them had poor social-economic statuses in an African country two years back. I wanted to help those girls be in school and be mentored to improve their future lives, given that some of them were giving up in life and some were almost dropping out of school. This was a challenging task because of the differences in culture that I had with the people and some of the country’s government regulations. I also had to work collaboratively with people and organizations with the same interests and vision. Empowering those girls also required that I had funds, which involved sending proposals, some of which got rejected.

I almost gave up the task. However, strong resilience skills and my interest in solving societal challenges motivated me. Eventually, I established an organization that would look for the most vulnerable girls, such as orphans, single parents, and those from poor social-economic statuses. We were able to identify a total of 200 girls, and we made sure that they were in school and that they had essentials. Also, I established a mentoring program where the girls were educated on various things such as preventing unwanted pregnancy and diseases such as HIV. When I got the certificate early this year, I felt accomplished, and it was proof that when we are resilient, we can achieve great things in society.
