Working in Health Care, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 569

Essay

Working in health care has been a great experience, and helping patients has always been in the focus of my practice. Having obtained a health care management undergraduate degree, I – however – soon realized that primary care can be made more effective and patient-centered. I became interested in training programs and degree courses that helped me learn how to improve patient outcomes and the overall effectiveness of health care. I believe that an MBA program could provide me with the theoretical and practical knowledge base to become a leader who is able to motivate people and refocus practice around patients’ needs.

I understand that health care management is about effectively organizing and building teams, ensuring that contemporary issues are addressed, and decision making is often challenging. I believe that the MBA program is able to teach everything I need to know about health care, human resources, operational, and strategic management issues that are related to everyday practice. I also know that today the health care industry is under a great pressure to increase efficiency and reduce expenditures. By doing so, providers can serve more patients more effectively, and I would like to be a part of the changes that are going to take place in the next few years. A struggling hospital that does not have the necessary resources for training, equipment, and patient communication is not able to survive in today’s competitive market.

During my practice as a healthcare and respiratory therapist, I have seen several issues that could be easily fixed by implementing effective management approaches and initiatives. Today, health care managers need to be focusing on the interest of all stakeholders, and this is a challenging task.  Serving the public, providing essential services, dealing with cultural and linguistic diversities needs specific business and human resources skills. Further, a health care manager needs to be aware of the population’s needs, and have effective communication skills. I believe that I am a person who can learn all aspects of managing people, teams, resources, and performance, therefore, I could become a nursing manager, working towards the following goals: improving the quality of care, making the operation of the health care unit more effective, and building a patient-centered, evidence-based practice.

The MBA program in health care management offers a comprehensive set of skills I need to become an effective manager who can not only manage people, but motivate them as well. My goal is to make a difference in the lives of nurses, health care support staff, and patients alike. Having bedside care experience, I know that communication with patients and their representatives is important for tailoring the service to individual needs. I also understand that making sure that every person’s concerns are addressed is crucial for success. Dealing with many asthma sufferers, I know that educating patients about their condition and providing them with guidelines on how to prevent episodes can make a great difference in their life quality and health outcomes. I often need to connect the needs of clinicians and patients, by planning intervention, diagnostic, and issuing devices. I am also the first point of contact, therefore, patients often tell me about their concerns and problems. I believe, however, that by becoming a health care manager I could address common concerns and health care issues more effectively. Should I be accepted in the MBA health care management program, I would focus on patient centered approaches and public health issues.
