Organizations of all kinds downsize both their locations and their staff in order to run more efficiently and cut costs. This is a practice on the rise, and increasing numbers of companies and corporations of all sizes are downsizing because reduced costs means a better chance of competing successfully in crowded markets.

For an organization to most effectively downsize, it must first take the time to analyze its entire operation. Not all downsizing impacts most heavily on staffing, and there are organizations that may find that outsourcing a strictly mechanized department will reduce costs; it could be that the overhead of a factory lease, for example, is more expensive than purchasing the manufactured product from another supplier.

Most downsizing, however, translates to cutting down on staff because payroll is historically the greatest expense of any organization. For example, a major corporation may find that leasing the services of a national parcel delivery company would be cheaper than running its own mail room and delivery services, and that laying off those delivery employees would greatly help their operating budget.

Today’s economic issues aside, all downsizing organizations are obligated to invest professional care in how layoffs are administered. Employees who have done their jobs well, but who are facing termination because of downsizing, should be allowed as much time on the job as possible to ease the transition. The organization is not responsible for the employees’ lives, but they must demonstrate good faith in a process they know to be very difficult for their employees. Retraining in other departments should be an option and a priority, and the organization’s human resource department should as well work with such employees to help them secure new positions elsewhere.
