A Health Care Provider, Admission Essay Example

Admission Essay

I was determined to be a health care provider after my grandma passed away many years ago. Becoming an advanced health care provider is my ultimate professional goal. My grandma fell multiple times and was put on bed rest for several years as a result. Although my mom and my aunts took turns caring for her around the clock, she still suffered from bed sores because of the lack of medical knowledge and services that were available at the time. She later passed away from stomach cancer. From that horrible day on, I knew I wanted to be a nurse or nurse practitioner to contribute to the medical field and hopefully find a cure for cancer, which has affected so many people in so many different ways.

As a young adult, when my English vastly improved upon moving to the United States after taking classes at Washington Community College, I chose to work in University of Michigan hospital as a volunteer. Although volunteering was an unforgettable and scintillating experience, I lamented not being allowed to interact with and directly treat patients. I later got hired for a job as a critical care technician in the intensive care unit after earning my Medical Assistant certificate at Ross Medical Center. As a critical care technician, I learned how to assist and communicate with patients and their families effectively. I also learned how to cooperate with physicians and nurses because, through effective collaboration, doctors and nurses are able to save the lives of patients who are in critical condition or are unconscious upon arriving at the ICU. The ability of medical personnel to work well together and save countless lives has fueled my desire to further pursue an education in the field of nursing. I attended the nursing program offered at Eastern Michigan University and earned my Bachelor’s degree there. I soon was hired for a job in Harper University Hospital located in Detroit and worked as a registered nurse on a medical-surgical unit for over five years and into the present day. I truly enjoyed this job because I was able to impart important information about their treatment while also educating them on how lifestyle changes will enhance their overall health. I take pride in using my knowledge that I learned from nursing school to provide the best quality of care to my patients. I make sure that after I provide  my care, patients understand what the medication side effect, what kind diet according to their health conditions and what congestive heart failure is and how to prevent it from relapsing. After these five years of experience in nursing, I feel it is time for me to enhance my knowledge to continue education in order to promote my health care.

I have chosen to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner in acute adult-gerontology not only because it is a great job that focuses on caring of young and older adults with acute/critical and chronic disease through the complex medical treatment that shortens the patients in hospital staying; but also because of the high demand for nurses in acute settings as a result of the baby-boomer generation aging in large numbers. The University of Michigan is a fitting program for me to fulfill this master’s degree as it is one of the ten most creditable programs in the healthcare field across the nation. Moreover, this program provides a stellar education predicated on the comprehension and application of health sciences theory while also pushing students to be clinically prepared in a way that shapes their knowledge and dexterity. It also provides diverse settings and talented clinical preceptors as well as the Clinical Placement Coordinator for students to match their clinical location. I would love to be a part of in such well-organized program to enhance my efficacy as a nurse within the field of adult-gerontology to gain empirical knowledge by participating in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of chronic and acute illnesses.

I believe that over the years I have learned from many people and have gained important experiences that will enable me to become a successful nurse in the field of gerontology as I grow sensitive to the needs of my patients and am cognizant of my duties and obligations to society, science, and the health care system. I believe that the learning process never ends, which is why I want to further enhance my studies at the prestigious University of Michigan nursing program.
