I tried my first Oreo when I was 5 years old in China. The only impression I made was that it was overwhelmingly sweet, and it is that sweetness that made me lose interest in Oreo. Ten years later, I had another Oreo and was surprised to be caught in the sensation of having a good sense of the taste, finally falling in love with it. This little experience in tasting one specific treat under the name of the same brand in two different countries brought me a whole new perspective of market-reality and product marketability.
It wasn’t until after I came to the US that I realized that many brands taste differently in different countries. Oreo in China is as sweet as I remember. Besides Oreo, branded food chains and beverages like KFC, McDonalds and Red Bull all tasted differently from what I had in China. It was then that I realized that me liking Oreo wasn’t because of my change in taste, but because Kraft adjusted Oreo’s taste in order to cater to the Chinese market.
Similarly, multinational companies like KFC have made adjustments to their products based on researches of the local market prior to entering the market. This is where data analysis comes in, as it is a great tool towards navigating the market. My re-discovery of Oreo has developed my interest in this area, and I believe that combined with my Chinese culture background, I would be able to help out companies as they enter the Chinese market with the hope of embracing business growth in my home country.
My undergraduate course has laid me a solid mathematical foundation as well as rigorous logic and passion to research and development. This foundation paved the way to further my interest in applied statistics. Although the undergraduate study has successfully cultivated my quality, I still lackactual operation ability of solving real world statistical problems. My aspiration is to be a supporting element for China’s customers and multinational companies which intend to enter China’s market pushes me to take on more complex steps towards studying statistics and determinable analysis.
In relation to this goal, I know that the MSc in Applied Statistics Program will provide me with the opportunity to go through the challenging development phase through fostering my ability in solving statistics practical problems. Besides the professional techniques in statistics, the program could also enhance my skills in communication, analysis and communicating the explanation of statistical results with my future cooperate companies.
Furthermore, I see that the program requirement for students to independently accomplish a dissertation on an applied project within three months would help me in pursuing a more professional course of development in relation to the career I am pursuing to master. The dissertation can simulate a variety of characteristics in addressing real world statistical problems, which could lay a solid foundation in future reality work.
Because of my plans and aspiration in introducing foreign companies to the Chinese market, I have decided to be double majors in Mathematics and Economics. Mathematics could provide me with better analytical thinking skills, as well as, laying foundation for further study in Statistics. In order to prepare my Graduate Studies in Statistics, I have taken a few courses in the field of applied mathematics and statistics. Additionally studying Economic has helped me to develop the ability for understanding key issues facing the economy and society and my critical skills to analyze economic issues with an open mind. In the field of Econometrics, I independently finish a research project with cross-sectional data.
After getting five or more years experiences in a consulting company, I plan to go back to campus by applying for some excellent MBA programwith specialize in statistics in the United States, such as Wharton. The MBA program could help me to prove my professional skill as an analyst and also widen out my horizon in international business operations and business growth. In the long term, I want to start my own business in China which will focus in analyzing China’s customers-preferences and China’s market needs so that foreign companiescould be helped to design a suitable market strategy towards entering the Chinese market.
