Admission Essay

My passion as an individual has always been to serve people all over the world especially in ensuring that everybody lives a healthy and completely happy life free from any health encumbrances. I have for a long time performed well in a numerous of health facilities around the state since I was 21 years old. My long term goal is to expand my coverage and be able to reach a wider number of people out there who need medical attention. I am fully able to work alone as I hold the aspect of life itself very seriously. Furthermore, my ambitions to further ahead in my career have seen me change my career from which I had obtained a BS in Respiratory Care to Nursing which is more varied and cuts across the entire health system. This has seen me serve more patients and thus achieve a more realized passion and dream. My career objectives are to seek a position in nursing that fully utilizes my skills and working toward acquiring more skills and being better in my area or expertise (Nursing), every day in order to alleviate human suffering.

My personal qualities have greatly contributed toward my advancement in nursing. I am hardworking and dedicated to nursing as a profession. In all the health institutions I worked for, I encountered numerous strenuous circumstances which I was able to adapt easily and blended in well. I am a qualified nurse having graduated with an Associates of Science in Nursing in December 2005 and I have been practicing nursing for the last six years now. I first started out at University of Maryland Shock trauma in the Neuro IMC where I worked with the brain injured patients. Then I worked at the Baltimore County Detention Center, where I was incharge of treating inmates. Afterwards, I worked for the Government at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, taking care of the Active duty and Retired service members and their families. After closure of Walter Reed in August 2011, I transferred to Fort Belvoir Community Hospital where I presently continue to provide care for the armed service members and their families. As a nurse, I was dedicated to and frequently establishing close relationship with all the patients I was working with. I learnt to utilize my excellent communication skills in openly talking and listening to the patient’s needs and concerns and expectations which are within my ability took appropriate action such giving proper medical attention and attending to their varied needs.

My experience with patients has always been of respect for people and set rules. Devotion to this profession has always been my aim. I was able to observe and respect confidentiality of the patient which has always been a basic requirement in this field. I am a cheerful and active person and I always made efforts to make patients feel relaxed and get comfortable in situations where they are in need of attention.

I am emotionally stable and in all stressful situations I have been in I have practiced to be mentally strong and not allowing such incidences deter my performance in the job, this attribute among others influenced my career choice and made me choose Nursing. Growing up, I have been compassionate and kind, these personal attributes have also helped me to a great extent in dealing with the patients calmly and kindly however aggressive. In understanding the pain the patients go through I have been able to provide sympathy and comfort to them as opposed to getting angry.

I have also seen my responsibilities and working hours changed from to time which I have been able to easily work with. No matter how demanding working has been for me I have been able to deal with emergencies which occur unexpectedly, extend duty working hours, work on weekends and overnight shifts with no eminent difficulty this has greatly enhanced my physical endurance which is also necessary on the job.

My professional plan is to promote best acceptable practice, proficiently and skillfully perform functions that fall within my responsibilities and demonstrate behaviour that is consistent with judgment, skill and essential knowledge.

The reason why I would like to pursue a Doctor of Nursing Practice as an Adult/Gerontology Nurse Practitioner is because I love to work with the adults and the elderly. In interacting with them I gain so much wisdom. In cases which I have dealt with some have had multiple co-morbidities to treat hence frequenting my interaction. With a DNP in nursing I would like to serve in the Air force and be able to practice in bases all over the world and continue to render health services to armed service members and their families. I also Iove and have a passion to teach, this would allow me to be able to teach new personal nursing and first aid skills in the work field. The reason I choose George Mason to pursue this degree is: first it is a very reputable institution which has throughout its entire existence has been a centre for producing professional elites. This desire to be elite in my profession has made me choose Geoge Mason as my preferred institution. As the largest public university in Virginia, Geoge Mason offers opportunities for interaction with diverse and dynamic culture. The commitment to excellence in teaching ensures that its students attain the level best high value knowledge at affordable rates. This is also another reason for choosing Geoge Mason University.

Also, since I have attained a BSN from George Mason, I would like to continue my studies in an environment where I am already familiar with the course work. My goals for pursuing DNP are; to have an opportunity to fully give back to the community and the world at large and I believe that in attaining a DNP I would be more varied in knowledge and more skillful in doing this. I am a very dedicated, hardworking individual. I take my studies very seriously, that’s why I don’t want to stop after I receive my BSN this May, and I want to continue directly into the DNP program. I was able to obtain my BSN with honors while working full time and taking care of my family and thus I can ably be able to deliver best results in my DNP. I love education and the knowledge that I obtain from it. I pray to God to give me the strength one last time to be able to achieve what would be the highest achievement in my life, which will grant me an opportunity to serve, develop further and change peoples life’s in the world.
