Counterfeit Drugs, Article Review Example

The PowerPoint presentation, “Counterfeit Drugs“, illustrates the degrading and detrimental effects of counterfeit drugs. The PowerPoint presentation points out the actual statistics on the amount of damage piracy of counterfeit drugs causes in countries across the globe.  For instance, it was indicated that 20,000 deaths have resulted each year from the use of anti-malaria counterfeit drugs.  The PowerPoint also states how counterfeit drugs are a rarity in the United States due to the strict implementation of regulations and laws for pharmaceutical drugs, compared to the 20% rate of counterfeit drugs in other countries.  The author of the presentation proceeds to show the reader/viewer the important aspect of the topic of counterfeit drugs in regard to what is being done to prevent counterfeit drugs.  The author explains some options that are available to help decrease the release of counterfeit drugs, such as radio frequency identification tags (RFID), which uses a trace and track technology on the drugs, as well as enforcing laws and regulations.  In addition, the presentation describes the use of parallel trading, which occurs when traders obtain drugs from one particular market and then resell to another market.

Overall, the PowerPoint is extremely informative in regard to providing statistics on the number of deaths worldwide, as well as the amount of money made in counterfeit drug dealing.  In addition, the presentation provides some answers that could help decrease the amount of counterfeit drugs introduced into certain countries; however, one important part that should be evaluated in this topic is the use of education to third world countries. Counterfeit drugs are occurring in poor countries where viruses, such as Malaria are prevalent. The United States and the World Health Organization should take measures to educate the public on counterfeit drugs in hopes that purchases will be made through reliable sources.
