Dentist, Personal Statement Example

It is often said life is one’s best teacher and I know this to be true from personal experiences. My dream to become a dentist was not born overnight but instead developed slowly due to both my family influence as well as my own work experiences in the dentistry field. My family has a long history of pursuing career in the healthcare sector which allowed me to observe the nature of their work. The holistic nature of the healthcare profession soon became apparent to me because healthcare professionals do not treat their work as merely a job but also take great pride in making positive difference in the lives of countless people day after day. As someone who has always dreamt of changing the world for the better, I knew my destiny also lies in the healthcare sector even though it would take my first job in the dentistry field at the age of fourteen to find my true calling.

Even as a teenager I understood the importance of college education but I was also not oblivious to the fact my parents may not be able to afford my college education. Thus, my first job at Dr. Sandhya Goli’s dental clinic was the first step towards generating funds for college. When I started working with Dr. Goli as a fourteen-year old teenager, it was just a job for me and nothing more. But Dr. Goli soon realized I am a fast learner and also have great social socials. Thus, she encouraged me to be involved with different aspects of running the clinic whether it was administrative work, customer service, or acting as an assistant to Dr. Goli. I soon immersed myself in the job because of tremendous learning opportunities. But I also started enjoying my work because I would see smiling faces almost every day, especially, those of children. I had heard before that nothing rivals the joy gained from bringing comfort to others but i didn’t really understand it until I started working with Dr. Goli. What started as a job to pay for college had become the greatest source of happiness for me. It was not difficult for me to see that my future really lies in dentistry.

I worked hard for four years which enabled me to save enough to fund first three years of college. This continues to be one of the proudest accomplishments in my life. It was not easy to manage both job and high school work load but my dream of becoming a dentist kept me going. I have always believed one finds a way for as long as he/she has the will. I have no doubt I will be successful in the dentistry program because I am truly passionate about making difference in the lives of others. It only helps years of work experiences at the dental clinic have also provided me with a strong foundation for my dentistry education.

I am fortunate to be pursuing this field at the right time. The demand for dental services has been growing not only due to aesthetics reasons but also health reasons. Latest scientific research demonstrates dental hygiene could help one lower the risk of certain health conditions and prolong his/her life. Thus, I also plan to engage in educational efforts to raise awareness about the importance of dental hygiene, especially, among low income groups.

I look forward to pursuing my dentistry education and achieve my dream of becoming a dentist. I am confident my unique background and prior experiences in providing dental services to patients will make me a valuable addition to the program.
