Acceptance Essay

This acceptance essay is respectfully submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for admission into the Doctor of Nursing Practice Executive Leadership Program.

I possess an MSN degree and am looking forward to being accepted into this program for the preparation it offers for leadership roles in a highly technology-focused health care system. I realize the importance of the five key competencies; namely, leadership, business intelligence, finance, health policy, and health services research, having already utilized these, some more so than others. Consequently, I realize that to do the best for others and for myself, I need to learn more in these areas. With respect to (1) leadership, I was a nurse supervisor for many years before I branched off into a nurse manager for a maternity department consisting of three separate units; namely labour and delivery with two operating and recovery rooms, multiple bed mother and baby unit, and a newborn nursery not overseen by a director. I have great autonomy, which I use productively to set and meet goals. Currently, my units, after having been open for

two years, have 99% patient satisfaction scores and 100% on all the core measures as well as the core measures related to maternity. With respect to (2) business intelligence, we were able to almost meet budget in our second year of operation and still maintain superb patient, staff, and physician satisfaction scores. With respect to (3) finance, my budget responsibilities consist of managing 79.1 full time equivalent staff and a capital budget of 80,000. With respect to (4) health policy, I created all the new policies for the three units when the hospital opened. I also had to become familiar with and be the content expert on health policy in the maternity department using (5) health services research.

In conclusion, I hope that I will be accepted into the DNP Executive Leadership Program.
