Dual Program in Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Personal Statement Example

Life is not always easy for some and things only get worse if they have not made any plans for the future. Such people are not even in position to help themselves let alone their fellow citizens. This statement may appear extreme at first but I have met many people who have no idea of what they want to do in the future or what are the goals that may be shaping their life course. Not surprising, such people feel unfulfilled and have little motivation in life.

I am fortunate to have realized the importance of setting goals early on in life. Having goals have allowed me to stay focused and use my resources more efficiently. My greatest inspiration has been my father who has not only encouraged me to pursue my dreams but has also taught me the importance of making positive difference in others’ lives. My experiences as a certified home health aid have allowed me to realize where my future lies. In my current position, I do not only aid the elderly patients and also volunteer as a psychologist. The feeling one gets by making positive difference in others’ lives cannot be described in words. I believe the demand for psychologists and health aid will continue to grow due to growing imbalance between professional and personal lives. I am good at understanding people which is why I see myself pursuing a career in psychology counseling. A strong academic background is essential to building a strong foundation for my future career. Thus, I have decided to pursue a Dual Program in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology. This rare combination of two broad modules into a single program will provide me with a unique advantage in professional life and provide the best care to my patients.

The career I have chosen requires both emotional and physical strength. Successfully managing challenging cases in nursing homes has convinced me I have the compassion and the capability to understand people and bring comfort to them. The Dual Major in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology is perhaps one of the most ideal combinations for anyone pursuing a career in psychology, given the emerging trends. Thus, I will not only have strong soft skills such as cross-cultural skills, communication skills, and leadership but also strong technical skills as a result of my education. The dual degree education will adequately prepare me for the professional challenges that lie ahead and will ensure my clients receive total quality care from me.

After completing Dual Major in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology, I plan to pursue further education in psychiatry or psychology. I believe in continuous education and moreover, advanced education will provide me with even greater flexibility regarding professional opportunities. Successfully completing academic degrees gives one immense satisfaction and also boosts one’s self-confidence that he/she is capable of accomplishing difficult tasks. The degree of satisfaction is even more when the task is difficult and, thus, completing Dual Major in Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Psychology will also significantly enhanced my confidence and self-belief and inspire me to aim for even higher milestone accomplishments in professional life.

I am the first in my family to go to child, thus, I also hope to set personal examples for others and inspire the younger generations in my family. I also hope my professional career will provide me with the economic resources to help others in my family pursue education and break free from the low-income cycle. I hope my children will even surpass me just as I have surpassed everyone in the family. I see this is a beginning of great and fulfilling life in which I will not only improve my own life but also of those in my family as well as in the greater society.
