Describe the key characteristics of a stakeholder and determine all the stakeholders within the PharmaCARE scenario.

PharmaCARE is a corporation that includes a number of key stakeholders which govern their activities on many levels, including its executive leadership and management teams, all other staff members, its corporate shareholders, and its customers. Each of these groups must be examined closely in order to better understand the dynamics of the organization and in order to determine what is required for each stakeholder to participate in the long-term success of the organization. In addition, the surrounding environment plays a role in this process and requires an evaluation of the different perspectives that impact the ethical decision-making of the organization for the foreseeable future, given the circumstances that currently exist. Therefore, the role of these stakeholders and how they are influenced by the ethical considerations of the case must be further evaluated.

Analyze the human rights issues presented by PharmaCARE’s treatment of the Colberia’s indigenous population versus that of its executives. Recommend at least three (3) changes PharmaCARE can make to be more ethical going forward.

From a human rights perspective, it is important to identify the specific factors that play a role in the activities that are being conducted by the organization and to take the steps that are required to ensure that the organization operates under a positive and sound ethical framework. However, this is not currently the case and requires an examination of the different issues that impact the actions that the organization is taking with respect to human rights. The environment surrounding an indigenous population must be protected at all costs in order to effectively manage the different needs of this population and to preserve its livelihood (Ondari-Okemwa, 2014). It is important to recognize this environment and to take the steps that are necessary to protect its interests as best as possible. For example, it is necessary to protect the surrounding environment and the people who reside in this community to improve ethical accountability for the organization.

First and foremost, there must also be a greater focus on the development of ethical principles to support the activities of the organization and its foreign interests. Most importantly, production must be safe for the surrounding environment and for the people who work for the organization, and when they do not receive ethically responsible treatment, this does not bode well for the organization’s ethical reputation. Secondly, there must be a greater emphasis on the safety and security of those who are affected within the indigenous population, as this will demonstrate the company’s focus on more than its bottom line and revenue streams. Finally, it is important for the organization to develop an understanding of how its practices are viewed by the outside world and to identify methods of giving back to the communities which are affected by the practices that are taking place. When the organization demonstrates this type of resolve, it is possible that there will be a greater focus on the people who will benefit from these drugs and to make their accessibility more cost effective for a larger segment of the population. From an ethical perspective, it is necessary to develop an understanding of the dynamics of ethical responsibility and to take the steps that are required to facilitate effective outcomes (Davila, 2011).

Assess PharmaCARE’s environmental initiative against the backdrop of its anti-environmental lobbying efforts and Colberian activities. Support the position.

Environmental concerns in the pharmaceutical industry are of critical importance in the development of new ideas and strategies to improve its reputation regarding lobbying against environmental issues. The support of the organization for its environmental initiative must outweigh the negative aspects of lobbying against environmental needs. It is imperative that the organization is on the positive side of environmental support and this is reflected in its overall message and focus that go above and beyond its lobbying activities. The production of pharmaceuticals often has a high negative impact on the surrounding environment (Milmo, 2014); therefore, this message must be minimized by the overall efforts that are made to improve the visibility of activities that are conducted by the organization that may negatively impact the environment. The activities that are taking place in the Colberian region must be taken into consideration with respect to any good that the organization is able to produce within the surrounding area, and these activities must also demonstrate a means of recognizing the value of advancing the objectives of the organization in a safe and effective manner that will not have a lasting impact on the surrounding environment. It is important for the organization to reflect upon its anti-environmental lobbying activities and determine if they are worth the continued risk that they present, while also aiming to improve its reputation in order to protect the environment from unnecessary risk as best as possible.

Decide whether or not PharmaCARE’s actions with respect to the indigenous people of Colberia would be ethical in accordance with each of the following ethical theories: Utilitarianism, Deontology, Virtue ethics, Ethics of care Your own moral / ethical compass.

The actions that occur in regards to the people of Colberia are not congruent with the message to protect the basic human rights of all citizens within a given area or region. This requires an examination of the different perspectives which govern human rights and their relationship to the pharmaceutical industry on many levels. Pharmaceutical companies and their production activities must be governed by a semblance of basic human rights in order to be effective in meeting the needs of the populations who are served (Taerel, Rosenberg, & Nicolescu, 2010). It is imperative that the actions and decision-making that takes place at PharmaCARE is consistent with the key principles of ethics, including respect for basic human rights and the ethics of care. From an ethical perspective, PharmaCARE must be able to represent its stakeholders and its constituency in order to promote its own moral fabric and ethical decision-making in a positive light. This will facilitate an effective response to the needs of those who are impacted by organizational activities and decisions. It is necessary for PharmaCARE to evaluate its own moral framework in order to be successful in meeting its objectives, while also considering how its level of attention to human rights is a critical factor in its overall success and longevity.

Compare PharmaCARE’s actions with those of at least one (1) real-world company, whose corporate activities led to ethical, environmental, or workplace safety issues and financial loss. Analyze the similarities and differences between PharmaCARE and the company that you chose.

The actions taken by PharmaCARE must be aligned with basic ethical frameworks and principles, learning by the example of others, such as Wal-Mart. The policies that govern both organizations are not consistent in their support of basic human rights, and this is difficult to overcome from a reputational perspective (Islam & McPhail, 2011). As a result, it is necessary to understand the dynamics of these organizations and to determine what has gone wrong with respect to the treatment of employees and of the surrounding environment. It is expected that these organizations would act in the best interests of their employees and other stakeholders; however, their desire for profits often gets in the way of these objectives and disrupts the overall decisions that are made. There must be a critical emphasis on the continued growth and development of the organization and its commitment to human rights in order to be successful in meeting the objectives of the group and in supporting human beings and the surrounding environment. Both PharmaCARE and Wal-Mart must continue to identify areas where they lack a positive ethical response and must work on their efforts to be productive and effective in meeting the needs of its key stakeholders. This will provide a basis for examining new principles and ethical decisions in the context of what is most important for those who are served by these organizations.
