Journalism, Admission Essay Example

Living in our tech savvy word, mass media controls every aspect of basic living. It has been very interesting for me to see just how much of an influence journalism has on society. For example, the use of social media has connected the general population and the celebrity world in a way that has never been possible before technology. When celebrities update their profiles or post a comment about current events, the message is viewed by millions instantaneously. Their opinions can both positively and negatively affect people’s view of the issue. My fascination with this aspect of Journalism has sparked a deep interest in verbal communication and other aspects of Journalism. A degree in Journalism will allow me to further develop my skills and develop a career doing something that I love.

As Journalism major, I will have the opportunity to develop skills that will prepare me for a career in various aspects of media. The field of Journalism is constantly changing and evolving due to the use of current technology. Technology is enhancing the way professionals use equipment and even online software.  Education is a lifelong process; likewise, the journalist never stops learning about the field. There is always more information to uncover and new techniques to be employed. Journalism courses will enhance both my speaking and writing abilities. I believe this is very important because speaking and writing are two of the most used ways to communicating. These skills can be used in all other aspects of my life. Being able to write and speak well says a great deal about a person. So, if I someday decided to leave the world of Journalism, I could use the skills I have acquired in some other job endeavor.

When I came to the United States as a freshman in college, the classes I took sparked my interest in humanities and media communication. I took a film education class and had the privilege of attending two screen openings of the films Only Lovers Left Alive and Belle. Because of this class, I had the opportunity to interview the directors of the film. After the interviews, I realized that the mass media business a lot of hard work.  This experience sparked my interest in the field even more. Since then, I have been able to travel to New York City and Los Angeles to get some firsthand experience in the field. I have been able to attend red carpet events and meet celebrities like Tyra Banks and One Direction. This has been one of the most exciting experiences in my school career.

Although I have never wanted to be an actor, I feel that my exceptional skills and hard work can be of great benefit behind the scenes. I know that I will be able to positively influence the world through my work with Journalism. I have had the opportunity to work with make-up and characters’ wardrobes in a school film.Through this experience, I learned how different aspects of things that happen behind the scenes can directly affect how the audience views the film overall. This was an awesome experience and I felt great knowing that my input had a positive influence on other’s experience.

My aim as a journalist is not to gain world recognition, but to be able to positively transform the way others view the world. As an artist, I see myself as Plato in the allegory of the cave. I merely want to change the way people view the world in such a way that it makes a positive impact on how they interact with the world around them. My overall quest is to enhance the way that people support and contribute to the society in which they live. Everyone desires to change the world, but many do not have the means to; however, my chosen profession will give me the means to change the world.
