M.SC. in Science and Technology, Admission Essay Example

Background

I have applied to the University for a place on the Master degree program in Science and Technology. I selected the University based upon the excellent reputation and track record in this field.  The University has a fine academic record with excellent tutors in the field of Science and Technology. I hope to build upon this foundation based upon my existing academic standing and experience in this field.

Experience criteria

My existing experience is that of a highly skilled nuclear propulsion plant operator as a Navy Nuclear Machinist’s mate.  Within this role I have the responsibility for repair of control monitoring and safeguard of naval nuclear reactors. We take a pro-active stance on both monitoring and maintenance and act as professional advisors in this area.  In addition I have held the post of ‘Chief Reactor Watch’; thereby providing safe operation of naval nuclear reactors, associated propulsion plants and auxiliary systems.  This naval training has encompassed a number of disciplines including that of Mechanical Engineering, Science and Technology.  A highly responsible role that has challenged me in mechanical engineering and developing critical sprecialized technology skills.

Prior to this I have completed experience with La Raisa in Caracas Venezuela working on Pratt and Whitney FT-8 Turbines and GE Frame 7 units. Performing duties including that of lead mechanical engineer. Other experience included:

• Inland Empire Energy Centre- 7H Gas Turbines
• AEP Plant – Mitchell Mercury Project – Lead Mechanical engineer
• Black and Veatch, Costa Azul, Mx Sempre LNG unloading facility
• Wood Group Wallingford CT – GE 7EA installation
• FPLE – Doswell VA – Mechanical Co-ordinator
• In addition, I have experience in BOP within the power industry.

Post graduation

Looking ahead post completion of my Master’s Degree I hope to provide a greater influence on the business application side of the Company that I chose to work for.  This means developing my management and leadership skills in association with the scientific and technical component. In this sense make myself a more marketable commodity in the employment market, indicating both a strong theoretical and practical background in Science and Technology.

Philosophy

It is my belief that globalization in the business world will help to define the qualified engineer in both domestic and international business.  The Engineer will have to be a multi-faceted individual that can converse in a number of languages, including English. In addition, will need a strong understanding of cultures and people in different countries and be adept at dealing with local decision making having the ability to often deal with a number of conflicting needs.  As such, it is important to learn the different leadership styles, particularly that of the transformational leader, in order to apply these in a practical setting. A balanced degree like that of the University will assist in these objectives.

A reputable engineering school

I selected your Science and Technology Faculty owing to the first class reputation it has obtained in the field of Engineering.  I was particularly impressed with the library and research facilities, together with the high degree of sophistication in Information Technology. As such I believe the school reflects my needs of an educational background for the 21st Century Engineer.  The school also has an excellent tutorial staff with leading academics in the field of Engineering.

My strong ambition to succeed is matched with my enthusiasm to do well in terms of accomplishment on this program. I have confidence that I possess the dedication and personal commitment towards hard work and achieving my goals. The M.Sc.  Program will help me to acquire professional and cutting-edge analytical skills, sound business knowledge and development of modern engineering skills.  This will be a solid foundation that I can build upon in the development of practical skill training once I have completed the M.Sc. program

The Engineering School will also assist in my development of a peer group and building of a network of like-minded business professionals.  This promotes team building and lifelong friendships that extends beyond University into the business world.  In addition the Alumni society assists in maintaining contact with the Engineering School and continues the professional relationship into the career development lifecycle in the business world.
