Admission Essay

I grew up in Iran which is a strongly male-dominated society, with traditional and older perceptions of women role still widely prevalent in the country. Growing up, I had a strong awareness of the preferential treatment enjoyed by men and the opportunities available to them. Due to my own strong academic performance as well as my study of the influential women in history, I never felt convinced by the claims that women are inferior to men in terms of intelligence and potential to make difference in the world. Contrary to the popular opinion in Iran, I believed that giving educational and career opportunities to women leads to the rise of the countries and not the decline because no one has a greater potential to influence the belief system of young generation like mothers. In addition, successful women have a greater potential to motivate the young generation because they have to overcome higher levels of adversity than their male counterparts to achieve the same level of success.

The earliest influence on my personal beliefs was my high school teacher in Iran who always told us that our only hope of gaining the same rights as men is education because it will help us gain freedom from our dependency on men and in addition, educated mothers usually raise up more open minded children who can think independently and challenge the outdated norms of the society. She was convinced that financial freedom is essential for women in order to make progress towards greater rights because lack of survival ability naturally leads to hesitation. It was obvious to me she was right because even in the west, greater women rights only happened due totireless struggle by women in the past who were once subjected to the same prejudices Iranian women still face.

When I came to the US for higher education, it was my first attempt at trying to survive on my own and my social skills were still at the beginner level. In addition, I also had to learn English but surprisingly, I felt stronger than ever in my life. In Iran, I had to make all the efforts to keep myself motivated but here I got so much support and encouragement that it gave me a renewed self-belief. I realized that you are motivated to achieve even more when there are people who put their trust in you. I was elected as the best speaker in a speech class I took to improve my English. I taught calculus and elementary statistics to some of my class mates as well as students as a gesture of appreciation for welcoming me to the land of dreams and possibilities. I also volunteered at the shelters, hospitals, and the department’s research laboratory and my volunteering with various on-campus organizations resulted in a community service reward from UC Davis. During my interaction with people from different cultures I realized that the best prospects of world peace are not homogenous but diverse societies. I observed many students from politically instable countries spoke highly of the American people despite the non-popularity of certain elements of US foreign policies. Everyone would say that Americans are the one of the finest people in the world and I could not agree more.

During my research stint at the University of the Pacific, my research supervisor saw a huge potential in me to become a successful researcher and encouraged me to pursue graduate studies. I stay up-to-date with the latest news from the scientific community and realize that Moore’s Law is as active in the scientific research area as it is in the computing industry. I believe that the scientific progress in the next ten years will easily dwarf the progress that has been made in the previous fifty years and I am excited to be part of the greatest scientific revolution in the human history to date.

I want to become a teacher and an instructor because of my utmost faith in the power of knowledge. I also believe that even though we face lot of problems but we have the ability to solve them. We have already made amazing progress in several areas such as medical science, food production, and resources’ conservation and this is why I find research really appealing because you are part of the selected few who are trying to solve the toughest problems in the world. I like to push myself and continuously expand my knowledge horizon, thus, it is no surprise I enjoy research. In addition, knowledge opens up your mind and lets you see the world through unprejudiced lens. It lets you differentiate between facts and opinions and help you get rid of your biases. I owe it to my education and my teachers/mentors that I have come this far and I want to inspire the same confidence in the coming generations. I want to transfer my knowledge to others because I know my students will further push the boundaries of our accumulated scientific knowledge. When we get rid of our personal biases and prejudices, we learn to appreciate others more and the key to peace is to understand others and value them. This world belongs to everyone and we cannot understand others if we only follow our own moral codes and apply our own standards on everyone. This is why I am going to teach for the rest of my life because I want to contribute whatever I can in creating a more tolerant and peaceful world.
