Medical School, Admission Essay Example

Admission Essay

I have always been interested in medicine from an early age. In particular having a multi-cultural background in both the USA and Russia has helped me to relate to people.  It is the recognition of people’s struggles in life and the limited access to medicine that peaked my interest in the ability to help others in the community.  Part of this personal journey related to my upbringing as a child in Russia and the time I spent with my Grandmother who was a pulmonologist. I had the privilege of observing her kindness and care to her patients. I noticed the satisfaction and sense of reward that the patients derived from her knowledge and care.  It was this early influence that made me realise that I wanted to be a healthcare professional in order to help people and have a similar impact on their lives.

I graduated from the University of Arizona in 2006 with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. In addition I have completed a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Arizona. Since I graduated and left the academic setting I have been working in the pharmacy field. This role has related to the provision of information to the healthcare and other public providers including drug therapy, management, medication, the dispensing and administering of preventative vaccination services etc.

As a practicing pharmacist I have had the pleasure of helping a wide community of people on a daily basis. Despite the importance and recognition of this pharmaceutical role I have been missing the development of direct patient care including the theoretical and practical applications of diagnosis, therapy implementation and evaluation and more direct experience in health care practice.  I do however, recognise the importance of the education and training that pharmacology has provided me in order to better understand the medical composition of drugs and their use in medicine.  I believe that this initial experience has provided me with a solid foundation in order to develop my career as a medical doctor and as such make a more valuable contribution to society.

I have proud of my independence and ability to support myself from an early age.  I have a high degree of work ethic and have always been employed whilst supporting myself through my school and further education.  This has been challenging in terms of getting the right balance between my educational training and supporting myself financially.  This, however, increased my determination in order to succeed and improved both my confidence and self-motivation.  I have spent a significant time doing volunteer work and this is where I have gained a great deal of job satisfaction working with people.

I have selected a graduate degree program in Medicine because this encompasses all of my key interests with particular emphasis on subjects that include: psychology, human behavioural studies, and medicine.  In addition I believe that it provides an avenue to further explore my artistic and creative abilities and the ability to interact with people or patients.  I am extremely committed to my work and will strive hard in order to make a positive contribution in my studies towards becoming a Doctor.
