Prompt #1
My desired field of study is Media Arts, as it would best allow me to express my creativity in positive and commercially valuable ways. This has been my passion before I could put a name to it, and all my energies from my earliest student years have been in this direction.
After graduating secondary school, I enrolled for a two-year course at the Vocational Training Centre in Hong Kong. The program, Advanced Diploma in Commercial Design, reinforced my conviction that this was what I most wanted to turn into a career. Even as I gained skills and in the field, I felt the need to take my learning to another level, and I was able to secure an internship in a major advertising company while still in my second year.
That experience provided exactly the sort of direct applications of media arts skills that I needed to grow. Between the job itself and my studies at the Training Centre, I was constantly learning new computer techniques in generating design. I became familiar with Illustrator, Photoshop, 3D Max, and Flash programs, as I learned how to employ these programs to express and create my ideas.
While these learning experiences were both essential and welcome to me, I nonetheless felt that I had to expand my education. Then, I was occasionally frustrated when a lack of real background knowledge interfered with my ability to present myself and my ideas at meetings. I wanted my foundation to be stronger and broader, and I felt that studying abroad would help me in better translating my art into actual, workable design. To that end, upon entering Bellevue College, I volunteered for the Campus Activity Board and was able to use my skills in promoting the CAB events through media. Through my studies and work there, as well as my past activities, I believe I am better preparing myself for my goal, that of being a international media design artist.
Prompt #2
One experience that I believe will stay with me for my entire life was the “Famine 30” activity. This was something I volunteered for while still in secondary school, and it gave me insights into myself and living I do not think I would haven otherwise had.
The reason I took part in this was simple: it was a challenge, and just seeing that announcement reading, “No Food for Thirty Hours” excited my curiosity. The activity itself was quite basic, and we were to go without food or shelter for thirty hours. I think I understood from the start that this was evidently designed to give us an appreciation for what so many people around the world endure.
This, it most certainly did. Over a thousand of us participated, sitting in a giant stadium and listening to speakers. One shared video of his trip to Bangladesh, and I found this truly inspirational. Those people, facing extreme hunger all the time, never revealed a lack of spirit or faith. I was hungry myself, of course, and dealing with the unusual and surprising emotions this brought out in me, as were the other volunteers. It created a bond unlike any other, as well as a deep respect for each other, as we knew too well what the rest of us were feeling.
From this, I think I fully understood that happiness is not a right. Well-being, even, is not an inevitable factor in life, and those of us fortunate enough to have plenty to eat must always remember that the world can be an unforgiving and harsh place for many. It is far too easy to take basic comforts for granted, and I do not think I will ever feel again that those I have are rights. Then, as I was made more keenly aware of my own good fortune, I realize it is my responsibility to ease hunger in whatever small ways I can.
Prompt #3
For me, being a student is a never-ending and rewarding way of life. By this, I mean that studying Media Arts is just one facet of the greater learning life offers, and I want to pursue as much as all of it as I can. My nature is optimistic, and I cannot help but wish to explore new channels in living and in study.
Loving animals is a powerful element in me, as well. Maomi, Xiao S, and Badt are my three cats, and I cannot foresee a time in my life when I will not have animals to care for. I volunteer for the Petco Adoption Center because I firmly believe that the happiness pets bring is something everyone should be able to experience, and because I want to do my part in ensuring that as many unwanted creatures as possible find their way into loving homes.
Essentially, I look forward to fully immersing myself into a Media Arts education, as I look forward to the personal and social opportunities arising from this effort. Happy now, I want to be happy in my future, and as an excellent, international creator of media design.
