The purpose of the article, “New Materials with Potential Biomedical Applications” written by SuomenAkatemia, focuses on the new discovered uses of bisphosphonates. Bisphosphonates have been used in the past as drugs to treat osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases. Now scientists have discovered that bisphosphonates can form into physical gels in pure water that can be used to improve the application of biomedicine. Akatemia uses the discovery in the research of bisphosphonates to give a concise understanding of how bisphosphonates can form into the gelation state, and can be used throughout biomedicine. As Akatemia points outs, the new form can be used as a substitute to improve, maintain, and restore the functions of bone tissue, act as supports to imitate the extracellular matrix, and provide support for cell proliferation, migration, and adhesion. (Akatemia) The other points that the short article emphasizes is that supramolecular gels much like the gelation that bisphosphonates can be reformed by heat. Also can be used in applications for materials in optoelectronics, chemistry, regenerative medicine, drug delivery, and biomedicine.
The article was written the main purpose in sharing the new discovered uses of bisphosphonates utilized throughout chemistry and biomedicine. The article uses sources from the team of scientists that discovered the gelation tendencies and the structures of the gels that were formed. Using the information from different researches that have studied the different components of bisphosphonates from teams in Department of Chemistry to the School of Pharmacy. The author intention was to share the new information to the general audience in the development for improved drug treatments to bone-related diseases. It was also beneficial to the general audience that varied from disease sufferers, doctors, chemist, and other medical professionals. The strong points of the articles the new discovery of bisphosphonates being able capable of being formed into physical gels in pure water. This discovery helps in creating new ways to apply the medicine, as well as the possibility to improve, maintain, or restore the function of bone tissue. (Akatemia) Other strong points are the focus on supramolecular gels are able to be used in regenerative medicine and new forms of drug delivery to patients.
While the relatively short article was written with the intention to share the discovery of bisphosphonates, and the applicable uses to biomedicine. There were several weak points; this includes not detailing more about the gelation process of bisphosphonates. As well as input from doctors or scientists in the usefulness that this could bring to helping with treating bone-related diseases. Much was left out, which contributed to the weakness in their article. The article proposed to provide a better understanding of the factors that affects the process of bisphosphonates forming into physical gels, however doesn’t go into in detail on what those factors are. Other factors are its abrupt transition to supramolecular gels that seem to be not flow well with the article. While the information is useful in talking about how gels used in biomedicine can be used in other fields, without providing more information on the correlations to bisphosphonates it makes the leap to other fields seem impossible or inaccurate. If given the opportunity to converse with the article, more questions would be asked on the limitations of using bisphosphonates as a gel in drug treatment. As well as the timeline that it would take for the gels to be used in creating new drug applications, and the impact that this new form would have on the effectiveness of the drug treatment to older patients.
