Parametric Modeling: Contemporary Non-Geometric Gis Conversion Methods In 3cd Diagram Production

Abstract

Parametric Urbanism has interested architects and urban designers immensely, in recent years. This contemporary thinking has been utilized in projects ranging from large scale urban development to building façade/surface design. Importantly, integrating demographics, cultural, and human factors into computer technology has so far seemed undiscovered.  Precisely, it would appear that there is a void created between the simplicity of parametric design process and the actual complex urban context. Certainly, in a real world situation this arouses suspicions to the extent of questioning the validity of the parametric urbanism method. This author has embarked on a study investigating the information processing of Parametric Urbanism and the description of a new procedure coined –Information Urbanism. Unlike parametric urbanism, Information Urbanism embraces cultural cues and demographics as being integral to parameters. Information urbanism is defined as a hybrid method, which seeks logical urban forms and analyzes its importance through urban design education. This author’s aim is to extend the method by exploring, collecting, analyzing, and visualizing urban information. It will then be physically represented in information through digital fabrication technology. This research is intended to articulate the potential of quantifying demographic, social, and cultural data into a parametric equation.Previous experimentsconducted integrated non-geometrical parameters within a particular format inquiry and fabrication. The finishedprocess resulted in a series of conceptual city make-ups. These models were developed by manipulating zoning, transportation network, city block and various building types of technology. Ultimately, the goal is for Information Urbanism to advance the strengths pre-defined in the present Parametric Urbanism method. It is also the author’s desire to capture benefits of Geographic Information System (GIS) by seamlessly integrating vital geo-spatial components in the equation. This initiation is achieved by altering the present system through which people explore possible design solutions utilized in generating the ideal urban forms.
