Parents Key in Managing Type I Adolescents’ Diabetes Treatment, Article Revie Example

More than 18 million Americans have diabetes. This illness prevents the body from processing food. Family history, body weight, and age can play a role. Payne (2010) talks about Type I Diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes. She speaks of the importance of families working together to manage Type I diabetes in their families. When families ignore Type I Diabetes in children, it can lead to serious health problems as heart and kidney functions can become impaired. Some researchers say that up to a decade of life could be lost because of improper care of Diabetes Type I.

This takes work. Patients have to monitor blood sugar throughout the day. They have to take insulin injections. They have to watch their carbohydrate and fat intake. They have to exercise. A recent study suggests that children, as they mature, receive less parental interaction with their disease. This causes a slack of self-care. In addition, when there is a strain in the parent-child relationship, monitoring gets less important to the patient. Warning signs include extreme thirst, frequent urination, sudden change in vision, sugar in urine, fruity breath, increased appetite, sudden weight loss, drowsiness, stupor, and labored breathing.

There is a delicate balance between nagging and caring. Living with Type I

Diabetes is a family issue. Parents should seek the council of other parents who have lived with a loved one with the disease to get helpful answers to their practical questions.
