Radiology as a Career, Admission Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 605

Admission Essay

After conducting much research on the topic of radiology as a career, I came to believe that I would be an excellent candidate for the radiology program. This decision was also based on a long-term interest in the field of radiology as a career choice which I feel would provide me with financial security and a sense of accomplishment related to working as a professional radiologist. As a person, I consider myself to be caring and compassionate, along with a drive to help others in order to make a difference in their personal lives. Thus, I am convinced that I am more than suited to radiology as a career choice, especially considering my outgoing personality and need to make a difference in the world.

From an educational standpoint, my goal is to major in the field of radiology and then pursue further education in order to specialize in ultrasound. Of course, I also plan to continue to educate myself throughout my career as a radiologist so as to keep abreast of new technological developments while also updating my professional skills. Overall, my experience in the area of health care came about after serving under three radiology technologists in the summer of 2012 and personally observing the daily routines at four major USI-affiliated clinical sites.

Visiting these clinical sites turned out to be very beneficial, due to being able to observe the use of x-rays, modified barium swallows, an arthogram, and a myelogram which I found to be the most interesting because it was something that I had not experienced before visiting the clinical sites. Technically, a myelogram is an imaging examination that involves the introduction of a needle into the spinal canal and the injection of contrast material in the space around the spinal cord via a combination of x-rays and fluoroscopy.

After visiting these clinical sites and speaking to the technologists, I realized that radiology was definitely an excellent personal career choice. One major reason for this is because I became intrigued by the unlimited professional roles of radiologists in many different medical fields and the various clinical problems that often arise in a clinical environment. In addition, I came to understand that radiologists also serve as important active memberswithin a management team and that advances in medical technology related to radiology is an ever-expanding area in which I as a radiologist would actively participate.

After completing my volunteer experience in the radiology department, I realized that many people in the general public would greatly benefit from my assistance as a radiologist and that as a professional, it is vitally important to be kind and understanding concerning individual ailments and their personal feelings. I also learned from my volunteer experience that open communication is the key to a positive and well-functioning work environment and the overall importance of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA)in relation to patient confidentiality. But personally, the most important thing I learned from my health care experience is patient care in relation to being respectful and responsive to the needs of every patient and understanding their personal values when it comes to making medical decisions and choices.

There are many aspects in the field of radiology that I find fascinating. Taking this into consideration, I would like to spend my training in an environment where I could gain the most knowledge and experience possible, and after completing my training, I would like to remain in a setting where I can actively participate in the ever-changing field of radiology. Therefore, I sincerely believe that a career in radiology is what I require in my life in order to ensure long-term happiness and personal fulfillment.
