Problem Statement
Road accidents can be and should be prevented. Still, worldwide are the major cause of trauma cases admissions in hospitals worldwide, according to Mansuri et al. (2015). The World Health Organization’s (WHO, 2013) report states that in 2010 there were 6596 fatal road accidents in Saudi Arabia. Further, the number of road traffic deaths has been rising in the country continuously since 2004 (WHO, 2010). Increased rate of road accidents results in unnecessary deaths and increased pressure on primary health care.
Research Question
The author of the current research is looking to answer the following research question:
“What is the main reason for the rising number of road accidents and increasing fatality rates in Saudi Arabia, and are government policies successful in tackling the causes of accidents?”
The author would like to review related statistics and research as well as national road safety policies in order to answer the above research question.
Literature Review
Al-Ghamdi’s study states that one of the causes of the rising number of road casualties in Saudi Arabia is human error and the lack of skills, as well as the large number of teenage drivers.
Mansuri et al. (2015) found that in Saudi Arabia, 19 people are killed by road accidents each day, and 4 people injured every hour (Mansuri et al., 2015, p. 419), while the Gulf News (Toumi, 2014) puts the number of deaths caused by road accidents daily at 17. The most commonly mentioned causes of road accidents are high speed and driver errors.
The WHO study (2010) states that the government has a national road safety strategy, with a fatality reduction target of 3 percent per year.
