Statement of Intent, Admission Essay Example

I have spent the last 15 years working mostly in the field of Construction Management. During this time I have gained a wide appreciation of the importance Business Administration and Management theory have in the workplace. I have already completed a Bachelors of Business Administration with the University of Phoenix and I consider this to be an excellent foundation to build upon for my postgraduate studies. In my current position as a Director of Construction I have major responsibility for construction activities and maintenance of properties throughout the USA. Whilst I have gained wide practical experience in this arena I would like to compliment this with more theoretical training in order to balance my profile.  In addition, working as a Controller I have gained an appreciation of the importance of Management Information Systems and aspects of Financial Reporting.

I have been married for 18 years and now have four children. As such I would now like to return to academic life and consolidate my existing education with the post-graduate studies of an on-line MBA program. I already have some experience of online and distance learning concepts with the University of Phoenix. I find this flexible method of study best meets my requirements and provides the appropriate balance between work, studies and my family commitments. This mode of study is particularly applicable for the mature student like me as I am already accustomed to the self-discipline, commitment and lesson planning.

I will bring a wide range of experience to the program that includes:

Director level business management experience;

• 15 year’s experience working in Construction Management;
• Good Human Resource Management skills, having secured and worked with contractors;
• High level of financial responsibility – several million $ development projects
• Financial Accounting experience as a Controller;
• Solid Business Administration experience

The University can expect to receive a high degree of commitment and professionalism in the approach to my studies.  I view the program as being of paramount importance to this stage in my career and I am determined to work hard and graduate from the program. Although I have gained a good foundation from my Bachelor of Business Administration program I need to build the theoretical skills more associated with the postgraduate MBA program.  I believe that it is the acquisition of this knowledge that will improve my skills as a business manager and subsequently raise my profile in the workplace.

I believe that the MBA is a good fit for me for the following reasons:

• The MBA is a very marketable Master’s Degree and has gained recognition throughout the world. It will elevate my status as a Manager in the marketplace;
• The MBA offers a very valuable Management and Business content that is more applicable to my development as a Business Director;
• It is a very flexible program enabling me to balance my work, life and learning goals;
• It opens the door to the Academic world and may provide the opportunity for Doctoral studies at a later date, should that opportunity present itself;
• The ability to network and develop a peer group amongst my fellow students will be a valuable contribution to my academic and work life development.

Above all the MBA degree is the right choice for me at this point in my life.
