I still remember being fascinated by the cultural and ethnic diversity of New York when I moved here from Jamaica, West Indies. I grew up in a country where almost everyone followed same culture, spoke same language, and had similar opinions on world affairs. I have always been inquisitive since my childhood and initially, I enjoyed New York due to diverse cultural experiences but soon discovered other benefits of living in a multi-cultural environment.

As I met people from different cultural and professional backgrounds, my thinking horizon expanded and my knowledge increased. I also became aware of values of other cultures as well as my personal biases. This helped me become a more objective and open-minded thinker. When we share ideas with others, we are better able to put ourselves in others’ shoes and be able to understand their perspective. This exchange of ideas also promotes respect, understanding, and cooperation.

I have done numerous computing courses and also have had several jobs over the years which have helped me build strong skills in customer service, leadership, problem-solving, resource management, and time management. But when I applied to Adelphi University, I was still not sure about the major I wanted to pursue. Thus, I took a wide variety of courses in general education to discover my interests. My criteria to choose the major were that it should be something I enjoy and second, it should also fit in with my skills and strengths.

I eventually discovered that I didn’t only enjoy nursing and found it to be a great fit to my skills and strengths but also found it compatible with my life philosophy. I grew up in a family that firmly believes in service to the community. My friends often tell me I am really good at understanding people because I listen attentively and do not judge people. This is also why I will be successful as a nurse because I get along well with all kind of people. America is becoming increasingly diverse and demographic patterns have been changing. Ethnic minorities such as Hispanic Americans are growing fast, thus, my strong cross-cultural knowledge will be an asset in providing the best healthcare to a diverse group of patients. Once I decided I want to pursue Nursing as a professional career, I did extensive research and have come to the conclusion that New York University is the most appropriate place for me.

One of my friends graduated from NYU nursing program and she has also influenced my decision to choose NYU. She told me choosing NYU was the best decision she ever made. She mentioned that not only her instructors were extremely brilliant but her fellow students were also very intelligent and engaging. The instructors made sure that students not only focused on technical aspects but also learnt about the emerging trends in the real world. In addition, NYU has working relationships with some of the best healthcare organizations in the city who providing challenging internship experiences to NYU students. This is why I am really interested in transferring to NYU so that I have access to one of the best nursing faculty in the nation and can interact with lot of intelligent fellow students. I will also bring a different perspective to the university as someone who has lived in a developing country as well as America and who has extensive cross-cultural experience.

I believe in continuous self-improvement and regularly read nursing publications such as Scrubs as well as visit nursing websites to stay up-to-date with the latest news and emerging trends. My extensive work experience has also helped me develop strong communication and people skills. I have no doubt an education from NYU will help me realize my full potential as a nurse and I look forward to being a proud member of NYU nursing community.

My main objective at NYU is to benefit from the knowledge of some of the best nursing instructors. There are some instructors at Adelphi which are more effective than others and I have personally observed how much difference a good instructor makes in the amount of learning gained by the students. I also hope to develop a strong professional network because NYU students get to meet leading industry professionals and many NYU students enjoy prosperous career over their lifetimes. In addition, I also hope to benefit from the diverse ideas of NYU nursing students who come from all over the world. NYU has a reputation for excellency and I expect NYU to attract nothing less than some of the brightest international students.
