Introduction

Strategic planning models in health information systems require expert knowledge and support in advancing objectives to the desired level. Strategic planning in this capacity requires organizations to determine the best possible approaches that will improve outcomes and that will contribute to effective results however, this practice requires an evaluation of different models that may have a significant impact on long-term results.

Analysis

Strategic planning in health information systems tends to play a role in shaping health reform in the modern era (Buntin et.al, 2010). Furthermore, this practice requires an astute planning environment that supports consistency and focus in the healthcare setting to drive results and improve patient care quality (Buntin et.al, 2011). Planning for a change to the strategic plan for the psychiatric unit requires team members to be trained in the use of the system and its components. This is comprised of a developmental stage and discussion phase to ensure that employees are in support of the strategic change effort as it is implemented. In this unit, information systems are utilized to track data and information regarding patients, including demographic information, diagnosis, symptoms, and medications, among other considerations. The system is utilized by the nursing staff in an effort to administer the best possible care and treatment and to be cognizant of patient needs at all times. When changes to a patient’s health status occur, they must be addressed in a timely manner in an effort to preserve patient health as best as possible. In this context, strategic planning requires a level of commitment that is focused in quality and results so that patient care is optimized at all times (Hans et.al, 2012).

Conclusion

The development of a successful framework for strategic planning in the psychiatric unit requires a specific focus and knowledge base to promote greater effectiveness in implementing the desired system. These factors are often attributed to the desire for improvements in psychiatric care and treatment in the patient care environment and support patient health within this unit.
