The Attitudes of Police Managers Toward Intelligence-Led Policing by Scott Philips PhD, Article Review Example

Article Review

Policing is an important aspect of organizational approach in defining the condition of a community’s social arrangement. Specifically caring for the safety and security of the people, police officers are expected to follow certain rules that would directly enhance the manner by which they respond to their duties as officers of the law. The manner by which the society is able to render trust and confidence to the police force is an important aspect of achievement that the organization realizes to be the core reason for their institution’s existence.

Being enjoined in an organization that is designed to provide social protection, police officers are expected to create a system that would best be able to consistently define the position of the authority over the law breakers. Seeing that crime rates continue to rise, it could be analyzed that a better sense of policing is then required. With this in mind, one specific form of leadership is discussed by Scott Philips as he intends to define the proper assumption of direction that would bring better characterization to the reputation of police officers working in the institution.

Referring to the role and responsibilities of the police managers, Scott tries to account for the efforts of the higher officials in the system to create effective manners of directing both the people and their assigned tasks to make sure that proper policing is thoroughly followed. Bringing about a sense of realization into his article, he tries to create a comparative distinction between the policing operations then and now thus proving that there were several changes that have been imposed in the efforts of improving policing conditions through the years of its operation. Referring to the benefits of Intelligence-Led Policing or ILP, this article helps police officers to see through their situation and become more effective in providing guidance to their team members which would lead to better options of establishing rules of protecting the values of the community.

ILP is defined in this article as an innovative strategy of policing which is centered on developing crime prevention efforts. It basically focuses on crime control, behavioral analysis and the management of the current issues related to the increasing rate of crimes in a specific area. Looking through the possible roots of the said problems, it is assumed that crime rates could be better controlled. Through the help of information technology and advanced computer-skills on the part of the managers and other operators of the system, crime data are to be stored and studied through a specific of time. Analyzing the data and giving specific interpretations to their worth in relation to the crime prevention approaches being developed is then expected to help in the campaign of lowering down the instances of crimes and law breaking acts in the community.

What is specifically good about this article is that the author, Scott, did not only present the pros of the system. Instead, he also gives a relative discussion on its cons especially in the aspect of human force entailing to accept the challenge of creating an intelligence-policing approach. Notably, training the people to use the IT-based data storage and getting analysts to specifically mandate the meaning of the information recorded in the database would require both time and money. Police institutions that are willing to undergo such development is hoped to make a specific impact on how they are to manage the changes and the challenges that comes along with it including training, monetary support and time scheduling.
