Pages: 1

Words: 298

Admission Essay

Bullying has always existed in our societies but internet has made it possible for individual members of the society to unite their voices in ways that were not possible before. Access to information and knowledge is at our finger-tips which is why episodes of bullying with serious consequences quickly become national news. Growing public concern and awareness has forced more parents, educators, and political figures to speak about the issue because internet has increased accountability.

There are several factors that increase the probability of bullying including individual vulnerability, unique cultural or ethnic background, social prejudices and stereotypes, and biased media coverage against certain groups of people. In addition, young people often underestimate the potential consequences of their actions, and sometimes merely desire to look cool by appearing to be powerful and intimidating. Internet has also increased episodes of bullying because internet provides false security of anonymity and moreover, it enables bullying round- the-clock. Tackling the issue of bullying requires joint efforts by parents, teachers, media, and even students themselves. Education is always the best weapon when dealing with group of people who may not have the level of maturity to fully grasp the consequences of their actions and we as a society should attach negative social stigma to bullying just as we have attached to racism.

Bullying takes several forms and is not just limited to physical violence. Bullying also includes spreading damaging gossip, psychological torture, and social isolation. Bullying is not just the domain of boys because is equally serious problem among girls, too. It is possible that young people often do not have proper understanding of bullying and may be unaware even when they would be engaging in episodes of bullying. Thus, we should educate our children and take joint responsibility to tackle the social evil called bullying.
