The KU School of Nursing, Personal Statement Example

A nursing career is the logical next best step for me based upon personal experiences throughout my life. Ever since I started caring for my younger brother who has ADHD, I have always taken pleasure in helping others. Later in my life, when I was stationed in Seoul, Korea, serving with the United States Army, I had the opportunity to participate Combat Life Saver (CLS) training with the 25th Transportation Battalion. I learned about battlefield first aid procedures such as dressing wounds, making splints, applying tourniquets, and starting IVs. While in the Army, I jump three pay grades in less than 18 months – quite an accomplishment for any soldier.

To build upon the training I received while serving in the military, I have taken a Certified Nursing Assistant course at Harper College. The second half curriculum included working in the clinical environment at Manor Care in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Manor Care is a rehabilitation center for patients released from Northwest Community Hospital and accommodates patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. CNA functions can be uncomfortable for many patients, but I was able to mitigate their apprehensions with good bedside manner and effective application of CNA techniques.

These and other experiences will help me contribute to the diversity of University of Kansas School of Nursing program. I am a good test taker, and I have a solid GPA. My personal interests and extracurricular activities include a love for music and the arts as well as sports. At Harper College, I focused on theatre as a hobby, and I also participate in softball during the summer. As a single mother, I bring first-hand developmental knowledge to my trade as a nurse.

I am interested in attending the University of Kansas School Of Nursing because of the outstanding undergraduate programs. I look forward to being a member of the University of Kansas student body in general and of the nursing program in particular.
