The Masters Program in Biotechnology, Admission Essay Example

I obtained my undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from SUNY Binghamton University and joined the U.S. Army. My professional excellence has helped me win Army Achievement Medal which demonstrates my leadership skills. I always enjoy meeting new people and benefit from their diverse experiences and perspectives and took the same approach during my Army career. I met and formed friendships with people who came from different departments in the Army and the insights I gained through them really amazed me such as the extensive use of biotechnology by the Army to improve the quality of life of its soldiers as well as achieve greater operating efficiency. As a result, I also started reading extensively on biotechnology to stay up-to-date with the current and emerging trends and soon it was clear to me that I wanted to pursue a career in biotechnology.

My academic and professional experiences have convinced me that one should pursue what interests him/her as well as suits his/her skills and strengths. We only make a serious effort to realize our true potential when we truly enjoy what we do and this is evident in almost every professional field whether science, technology, business, philanthropy, or politics. One of my strengths is curiosity and never-ending desire to learn which will be an asset to a career in biotechnology.

I use my background in biotechnology to benefit the U.S. Army which has become my second family. Biotechnology projects often require huge capital commitments and U.S. Army has an advantage over the private sector since it can take projects with long-term potential even if the short-term financial pay-off may not be attractive. There is a reason how projects undertaken by the U.S. military have created some of the most valuable technologies in use today including the internet and the GPS. This is why I want to work for the Army because being in Army will provide me with more freedom to engage in research and develop technologies and solutions to some of the major issues faced by the military and which may also have civilian applications.

My future goal is to become a research scientist with the military’s technology labs and pursue research interests in the field of Medicine, Biodefense, and Protective technologies. My experiences in the Army have also introduced me to the dark side of wars and how the lives of injured veterans are turned upside down in ways beyond their wildest imaginations. These issues have had huge emotional impact on me which is why I am determined to obtain my Masters Degree in Biotechnology and help towards creating technologies that can minimize the loss of precious lives in military conflicts and also enable soldiers to return to normal civilian life more comfortably.

The Masters Program in Biotechnology will help me develop my technical background and will also expose me to the latest discoveries in Biotechnology that may be just theories at the present but have huge potential for military and civilian technologies. In addition, I will also be able to interact with intelligent fellow students from diverse professional backgrounds which will further expand my thinking horizon. This degree may be one of the best investments in my future and I hope I will be an exemplary ambassador of the University in the real world.
