The University of Maryland, Admission Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 475

Admission Essay

When I take a look at the local community and many of its stereotypical behaviors, I realize that my family and I have been living in a bubble for quite a while.  On a recent trip to Baltimore, I was able to interact with so many people from different backgrounds and religious beliefs that I literally felt a culture shock for the first time.  The world is not limited to the minimal views of my local community, and diversity is one of the most important aspects of gaining different perspectives.

The University of Maryland prides itself on being able to maintain a diverse community and student population, which provides its students with a number of beneficial factors.  With a major increase in globalization and a merging of cultures, diversity is a very important factor in our society.  Historically speaking, diversity has provided us with a culture that provides women and minorities the opportunities that they never believed were possible several decades ago.

Diversity helps people to become more sensitive to the world around them.  What may have been acceptable in one place of the country may be completely unacceptable and offensive to people in another part of the country.  The same can be said of racial differences, religious differences, and so much more.  Therefore, it is important to understand diversity in order to be able to live and work together with people from all different backgrounds.  Leaders must also understand simple and complex issues to help provide guidance and support to the members of their team, group or company.

I truly believe that the University of Maryland will help provide me with a social experience that I could never receive anywhere else.  Diversity is so important in our country and in our international communities.  This is an opportunity to step outside of my little box at home and expand my understanding of the world and the people I live with here in my country.  Not only will I benefit personally from this experience, but the diversity at the University of Maryland will also give me a chance to make friends and have professors of all different backgrounds to mentor and guide me.  I know that I will make friends that I will have for the rest of my life, and when we graduate four and a half years from now from Maryland, we will be able to say that it was a chance in a lifetime.  Diversity will help make our experiences so much special because without this opportunity, I would never be able to learn the lessons of diversity and make any friends from backgrounds different than mine because of the restrictive community I live in.  For this reason, I am applying for admission into the University of Maryland and I believe this will help take me on a journey that is absolutely crucial in my life.
