The article on Law, Morality, and Vietnam represent the conflict between the conscience of the judge and the conscience of the moral hero. From the article, peaceful militants who were arrested for challenging the government’s military policy used their trials as a platform to challenge the morality and legality of the government’s actions. In this case, the peace militants represented the moral hero who acted within the interest of the public. They deemed illegal, and unethical for the government to engage in some war practices. Conversely, the judges in the case realized that accepting the demands of the peace militants, would compromise their responsibility to the society with regard to the provision of justice.

Even though moral heroes act for the interest of the society, the courts also have to respond in order to mitigate chaos. Such chaos emanate from a society that do not respect the rule of law. Conversely, the law is also a work of conscience that should not be disregarded in favor of moral hero. The juries, or the judges who preside over cases of defiant peace militants, often find them either innocent or guilty. They do so on behalf of citizens who have a responsibility of affirming the moral values which the conscience of their society is attached.

Traditional sociology tends to presume that the State is part of the social system and that a system of power only operates at some level within the system. Hegel’s analysis of social freedom is distinguished by a firm separation of the political system and civil society. His approach is more theoretical since throughout his study, he focuses on the basic properties of social and political structures. This conflict depicts areas that lack in Hegel’s analysis of social freedom.
