Admission Essay

I still vividly remember by introduction to Ciara’s 1,2 Step song on a Wednesday night at the Jazz technique class at the dance studio. The studio was my safe haven because it allowed me to freely practice my dance techniques without the fear of being judged by anyone. In addition, when people with similar interests get together, they have a genuine interest in learning from others as well as helping others improve.

On this Wednesday night, Miss Shannon decided it would be a good idea to work on ‘improv’ in order to encourage the students to get creative. This was my first experience with ‘improv’ and not surprisingly, I got nervous. To make the matters worse, Miss Shannon decided to choose the songs herself as well as randomly calling students to present their ideas. I was so confused I didn’t even realize everyone had presented their ideas and it was now my turn.

As I walked to the front of the class, Miss Shannon turned on Ciara’s 1,2 Step but I suddenly lost the ability to move. Luckily, one of the other instructors was passing through the class and immediately recognized my nervousness. She came to me and gave me the most confidence-inspiring advice anyone has ever given me, “Life as we know it will not come to an end if you step out of your box and do something crazy.” These few words gave me all the confidence I needed and I completed my performance without a single moment of hesitation. I might not have given the perfect performance but at least I tried and that is all what mattered. We don’t know what we are capable of until we try and we cannot improve until we are willing to embrace the mistakes.

This experience also taught me about the power of encouragement in motivating others to do their best and achieve their true potential. We all have amazing potential though our strengths may vary and what often prevents us from trying is lack of confidence. This is why I want to pursue the education profession so that I can also help others achieve their dreams and become the best they are capable of.

I acquired love for knowledge and developed an inquisitive mind at an early age. In addition to reading books on a diverse range of topics, I have also met people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds who have helped me develop strong communication and cross-cultural skills. In high school, I often helped me friends with assignments and they would praise my teaching skills. They would tell me I have an amazing ability to understand people and adapt my teaching style to suit the needs of the learners. This is why I am confident of becoming a successful educator because not only I believe in the power of knowledge but am also passionate about sharing it with others to make this world a better place for the future generations.
