Article Source: Replacing caloric beverages with water or diet beverages for weight loss in adults: main results of the Choose Healthy Options Consciously Everyday (CHOICE) randomized clinical trial
Authors: Deborah F Tate, Gabrielle Turner-McGrievy, Elizabeth Lyons, June Stevens, Karen Erickson, Kristen Polzien, Molly Diamond, Xiaoshan Wang, and Barry Popkin
Journal Publication: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
Background of the Literature
The aim of finding a relative condition of developing the healthy habits of eating among adult individuals has become one of the most important concerns of the society at present. Health professionals have observed that at the age of 40 and above, more individuals become specifically affected by their diet and at times, not properly handling such condition of discipline results to complications and the development of other ailments. In the research performed by Tate and her colleagues, being able to measure the capacity of the human body to repair itself through the help of healthy diet is proven through replacing caloric beverages with non-caloric beverages. Such an approach is expected to lower down the weight of the participants thus lessening the possibility of developing weight-related ailments in their latter life.
It is true, and has been proven through research that adults at the age of 42 and above experience slower metabolism hence resulting to slower process of dissolving carbonated drinks, which often turns out to be the source of several ailments in later years. Old age accompanied by slower condition of body-function does create specific problems that are often hard to handle for the body at a later age. It is for this reason that the option of changing the common diet of the participants of the research has been suggested to see how much dietary adjustment on liquid-intake could contribute to better health for people of older age.
Produced for the regular publication of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, this research tries to establish a fact that would develop the better way of assessing and improving healthcare provisions for older individuals. Considerably, it is assumed that through adjusting dietary schedule for the older sector of the society, lowering the rate of those experiencing obesity, diabetes and even heart diseases could be better controlled in the future.
Problem Addressed
Old age comes with several different disadvantages. It could be realized that somehow, such disadvantages come with complications that often even makes it harder for them to realize their older years with a happy outlook in their lives. Relatively, the practices and the lifestyle that they use to embrace at an earlier age finally pay off during their older years. Sadly, only 45% of aged individuals are able to reap the good results of their healthy lifestyle when they were still younger. The other 55% have actually used their younger years with a carefree lifestyle, drinking and eating what they basically like without thinking of the nutritional value of whatever they take in.
As a result to this fact, careless individuals experience hardships and complications when it comes to their health in later years. Relatively, this specifically indicates the need to assess the situation of the individuals specifically afflicted by the situation and create a procedure that could help them avoid complications in their health as they age. The research by Tate and her colleagues specifically addresses this issue through an experimentation approach that would define the actual results that could come from the implication of dietary adjustments. Noting such results is expected to create a vivid picture that would be able to impose on a sense of realization on both patients and healthcare providers as they asses the process that they are inculcating in the way that they are dealing with their elder patients. This way, it is expected that a better option of preventing obesity and all the other ailments that accompany it could be further defined and implicated in terms of practical aspects of considering the problem and developing relative solutions for it.
Methodology
To start the experimentation’s process, the researchers have invited overweight and obese adults with 318 BMI where 84% of the respondents were females. The said group was subdivided into two categories, the DBs [the ones who will take the water diet] and the ACs [the ones who are to take in carbonated beverages as they regularly do]. This would then indicate that the category AC is the control group while category DB would stand as the experimental group. A comparison on the results regarding the integrity of the health of the participants has been accomplished after six months of applying the said approach.
This considerable procedure is expected to show a relative condition of difference on the health integrity of the participants after six months. The length of time [which is six months] has been implemented to be able to gauge how much difference the dietary allowance would create on the health status of the patients involved. It is assumed that a shorter span of time would provide less-convincing and less reliable results in relation to the aspect of elder healthcare that is being examined and the solution that is being developed in relation to the issue concerned.
Experimentation and Results
After the application of the methodology on dietary allowance adjustment, the experiment yielded a relative comparison on the how much the DBs fared specifically better than the ACs. Water, which is a non-carbonated beverage specifically allowed for a better flow of nutrients on the body systems of the chosen participants. Understandably, those who continued taking in carbonated beverages acquired lesser amount of nutrients from the food that they were served for six months. As a result, the DB participants were able to lessen down the instances of developing obesity. With proper weight loss as an effect of the practice, symptoms related to diabetes as well as heart ailments have been reduced. Apparently, even with the implication of regular exercise for the patients involved in the process, those under the DB category still recorded a more effective weight loss result compared to those belonging to the AC category. Overall, the replacement of caloric beverages with non-caloric drinks has resulted to a 2-2.5% weight loss on the participants who joined the experimentation.
Analysis
The experimentation process embraced by the researchers of this study Is indeed a relative source of solution to the specific issues of developing obesity among individuals living in their 40th of age and older. Considering the reliability of the study that was produced, it was convincing that the intake of non-carbonated drinks results to better weight loss. Understandably, the result of the research that has been considered in this study conveys an important message with regards the approach on how to deal with current issues dealt with by old aged individuals in consideration with the integrity of their health. At this point, it could be agreed that the condition of definition that the researchers imposed in relation to obesity and its impact on health is valuable enough for practical use. The knowledge that was developed from this research is a great help in identifying the course of development that health for older people should take into consideration.
Overall Critique of Research
Overall, the value of the research could be assumed important in the course of developing the manner by which the health needs of old aged individuals is given practical attention to. Relatively, such approach to a manifested process of development in healthcare indicates a course of advancement in understanding the capacities and limitations of the human body as it ages. Responding to these aspects of physical integrity at an early stage keeps away the possibility of ailments that might occur along the way.
The methodology of study that was used by the researchers was evidently purposeful in proving and setting the comparison between a healthy lifestyle and diet and how it affects the integrity of one’s capability to withstand the disadvantages of old age. From this point, it is presented in the research that the willingness of individuals to stay away or at least keep a limit on themselves regarding the intake of carbonated drinks would provide them a chance to live healthier and longer lives that is specifically able to avoid the symptoms and development of obesity. Water was presented to be a cleansing and a regulating agent that has been set aside by human individuals at the entrant of processed drinks. Going back to the basics insists on the consideration of individuals to give importance to the role of water in relation to their health. Taking in natural and unprocessed beverages would provide a better source for better health.
