Admission Essay

What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field – such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities – and what you have gained from your involvement.

Today my college career is preparing me for the world of business. While I am passionate about my chosen field of study today, I was not always sure that this would be my path. My original goal was to be a professional soccer player. Playing soccer has been a passion of mine since I was just 4. At age 14, I was chosen to be in my regions “Under 15” Soccer Team. At the time, I felt that this was my dream come true and that I was well on my way to achieving my dream. However, after careful consideration and upon the advice of my parents, I realized that majoring in Physical Education would be a poor scholastic choice that would bring little benefit to me should circumstances change.  Finally, I decided to embark upon the path to a career in the business world.

While my parents were an inspiration to me in choosing business as a field of study, my father is not a successful businessman and has suffered many disappointments in the business world. He has repeatedly embarked upon business ventures, including opening a nursery school, a leather shoe factory and even a supermarket, all of which have been failures and none lasting more than three years. However, I have studied my father’s failures, vowing to learn from his mistakes. As an avid history buff I believe that much can be learned from studying the past.

I have successfully applied the study of historical market and economic trends in order to make sound business decisions for my family. My parents were interested in investing in the stock market in 2008. I researched the economic history, and applied it to the current global economic situation at that time. My research led me to believe that 2008 was a poor year to invest and I advised my parents to hold onto their capital. When the stock market crashed in October of that year, I saw just how important the study of history can be to making sound business decisions. In the spring of 2009 we began to invest and happily we saw a profit of at least 30%.

The next chapter of my life began at the age of 18. Since I had decided on a career in business, I felt that it was important to receive an education in a country that is known for producing the world’s greatest businessmen. I moved to the United States and enrolled in Diablo Valley College. I immediately got involved with the student body by joining International Students Club (ISC). I was elected three times as the Activities Coordinator of ISC. After showing my leadership skills and motivation in the club, then I was elected as president of ISC. My participation in ISC has improved my organization skills and helped to advance my business proficiency.

When I became involved in ISC, the organization was facing some challenges, including low enrollment, financial and organizational issues. I applied what I had learned in my DVC business classes, using marketing strategies and labor specialization to solve some of the issues with ISC. By collaborating with The International Students Admissions and Services Office and other cultural clubs on campus, I was able to put ISC in a better position. The clubs membership is now doubled and the ISC account has tripled in just one semester. During the summer of 2010, I was able to go from an ordinary student into a well-prepared, organized and energetic leader, putting my business knowledge to use in a real life scenario and bringing benefits to both DVC and ISC.

Besides my dedications in ISC, I have also served as the Senior Vice President of Students in Free Enterprise, a business club, and as the Activities Coordinator of Associated Students of Diablo Valley College. I have assisted in guiding a business club, chaired a committee in the student government and organized festivals on campus Participation in these organizations and activities has further heightened my aptitude in management and organizational capacity. I am exceedingly proud that my events have enhanced student life and connected to my community.

I have been growing through my DVC experience and extracurricular activities and I am enthusiastic about entering into the professional business world. I am sure that majoring in Business is the best choice for me. After DVC, I plan on attending the University of California as my next step to realizing my dream of becoming a business professional.
