Why I Want to Enter the Medical Laboratory Technician Program, Admission Essay Example

It has always been my ambition to enter a profession that will allow me to demonstrate compassion to people in difficult circumstances.  I believe that the Medical Laboratory Technician Program will provide me with the practical and academic skills necessary to enter into a field that has numerous opportunities for me to assist people in a kind and professional manner.  Although I am aware that not all people are frightened or uneasy when they have to give blood and other specimens for medical testing, it has been my experience that needles can make people nervous.

My grandmother was a diabetic, and I grew up watching her administer shots to herself.  This prepared me to be comfortable handling medical paraphernalia, as I sometimes would help her, especially once she got a little older.  I also had the opportunity to accompany her to the medical clinic, where I often watched the staff at work while I waited.  There were some laboratory technicians who treated patients in a rough and cursory manner, and I could easily see the negative effect such behaviors had on patient-experience.  I also witnessed technicians who demonstrated kindness towards patients, easing tension with a joke or a comment about the weather.  Such actions did not slow down the completion of their duties, but it did make it easier for them to perform their task as they rarely met any resistance from the patients.

As a student, I have always enjoyed working in laboratories and following the appropriate guidelines and procedure to complete tests and experiments.  I follow direction well and I am detail-oriented.  I believe that the Medical Laboratory Technician program will provide me with the broad-based skill-set that I will need to be a successful part of a laboratory team.
