X-Men, Movie Review Example

Movie Review

The characters in the film X-Men released in 2000 use many futuristic gadgets, vehicles and weapons however the most impressive pieces of technology displayed are those that are used to enhance the mutant powers of the characters.

The most impressive piece of futuristic technology used in the film is the machine created by Magneto to make his mutant powers stronger in order to send out a wave of radiation, which will turn all of the world leaders for the world summit at Elis Island into mutants. The machine Cerebro used by Charles Xcavior to connect his mind to other mutants worldwide is amazing to watch. As are Wolverine’s adamatium claws. The machine used by Magneto is designed to end the fighting between mutants and humans once and for all, by turning the most powerful people in the world into mutants, therefore forcing them to understand that mutants are people too and that prevention of their oppression must be their cause too. The machine Cerebro allows Charles Xcavior to connect his mind to other mutants worldwide, speak to and track them. He uses this machine for good to track potential students and bring them to the safety of the mansion. Wolverine’s claws disturbingly are the result of human experimentation and are designed to be part of an unbreakable metal skeleton fused to his bones.

As there is no such thing as mutants in the real world it is highly unlikely that we would require any of the technology used in the film.

The technologies shown in X-Men are unlikely to ever appear in the real world as we do not currently posess the intelligence or financial resources to create a machine capable of reading minds or graft a metal skeleton onto a man without killing him. However in theory Magneto’s machine could be created as it is only designed to emit radiation.

The rhetorical purpose of the machine used by Magneto is to end the war by forcing the world leaders to understand that mutants are human too and that there is no difference between them but also show them the effects of their oppression of mutants by forcing them to face it themselves. In the film mutants are being hated and experimented on for their powers and many people have died. Magneto is angry and bitter and wants to push mutants into a position of authority over the oppressing humans by making their leaders into mutants.

The machine has many ethical complications in that what Magneto is attempting to do   is essentially poison the crowd with massive levels of radiation which is wrong. Also his test subject Senator Kelly actually dies because his body will not accept the unnatural mutation and Magneto decides on learning about this from Wolverine that he will go ahead anyway. Finally Magneto is unethical in his use of the mutant Rogue whom he uses to power the machine. He transfers his powers to her and forces her to use the dangerous machine despite the fact that using that level of power could kill her.

The machine if created would most likely be completely unsustainable due to the massive amounts of radiation and power level it would require.
