A Typology of Family Social Environments for Institutionalized Juvenile Delinquents: Implications for Research and Treatment
What makes juvenile delinquency at the higher rate of rising especially in this time and era? The world has never seen such an increase in cases of juvenile delinquency yet compared to what is happening at present. The work of Carol Veneziano and Louis Veneziano entitled A Typology of Family Social Environments for Institutionalized Juvenile Delinquents: Implications for Research and Treatment gives a distinct sense of direction and indication as to how family units are able to create a defined essence of effect on the thinking and actions of younger members of the society. In this study, the researchers tried to examine the social connection of families from where juvenile delinquents are associated with. This allows the researchers to pinpoint the reasons outlining the condition of thinking of the youngsters especially in relation to why they have decided on matters the way that they did.
To make the study more grounded on strong logical and rational procedures of information definition, the researchers asked the involvement of at least 411 young offenders were kept in particular correctional. The participants come from a specific age-range from 12 to 16 years old. Most of the individuals have already committed an average of 16 months of stay within the correctional. Upon obtaining results of research and survey from the said set of population, the use of FES data to provide a more defined indication on how nuclear family environments affect the thinking and development of the young individuals observed in the study. The observation spurs out to several aspects of personality analysis among the participants. Among the factors of personality adjustment measured in this research include (a) examination of personality development; (b) social behavior and (c) intellectual capacities. Noticeably, these elements intend to create the wholeness of a person; basically creating a more defined individual that is able to determine the connection between right and wrong; allowing them to decide more effectively [in the hope of avoiding the concepts developing to aggressiveness that often results to cases of juvenile delinquency].
As a finalization of the study, the researchers claimed that family units are able to affect the being of each child basing on how they view themselves as a unit particularly existing in a common society. Noticeably, with the emergence of social status as one matter that controls the thinking of the people, it could be understood how juvenile delinquents follow through their family-idealisms and the disillusion that they are getting from their surroundings. People existing around them tend to make a distinct effect on how they think and how they perceive life. Practically, it could be understood that somehow, there are instances when such assumptions over the effect of family culture and behavior on young individuals create a more definite source of pressure that may be attributed to the resulting aggression among the said youngsters.
The study then concludes that juvenile delinquency could be controlled if common social constructs are to be adjusted. Relatively, this conclusion intends to make a connection on how families view their role in determining the attitude of the children which basically affect the overall being of these individuals not only during their younger years but even towards maturity. These thoughts, cultures and idealisms basically create a more definite sense of identification on the source of aggression that pushes youngsters to embrace a less amicable sense of concentration on what is good and what is acceptable. This means that everything could be controlled with the help of everyone involved. Each member of the society [especially the basic unit of the family] could contribute to the creation of a much acceptable sense of determination on how possibilities of juvenile delinquency could be further controlled accordingly.
