Personal Statement

I have been interested in numbers as far back as I can remember. As a child, I played number games when other children were playing with dolls and trucks. One could find me using a calculator or just trying to see how many numbers I could manually add together. I would practice this for hours on end. In grade school I excelled in my math classes. I would always be finished before my classmates. Often, my teacher allowed me to work ahead of the other students because I grasped math concepts very easily. Other times she allowed me to peer tutor my classmates. Even when I had homework, I would do my math work before any other subjects because I enjoyed it so much. At an early age, I realized that understanding numbers was very important. I could even see how understanding and using numbers were helpful in real life situations. A major influence on my choice to major in finance was my parents. Both of my parents are financial managers who work for Agricultural Bank of China. My parents are excellent with numbers. As a child, my mother would compute the grocery bill in her head before it was time to pay for the items. My father would compute measurements in his head when working on house hold chores. As a child, it was amazing to see them do this. As a result, this sparked my interest in numbers. Growing up in China, children are taught to respect and revere their parents. I have great respect and gratitude to my parents because they helped to shape me into the young man I am today. They have made so many sacrifices for me so that I would be able to attend a great university. As a result, it is my utmost goal to make them proud by being a great success.

Currently, I volunteer tutor Calculus at my school. I enjoy working with students who have difficulty with math. I particularly enjoy when a student understands a math concept that he/she did not understand prior to my assistance. Students enjoy working with me because I am very patient when they are having a difficult time grasping a concept. Being patient comes easy to me because I am teaching something I love to do. I don’t mind re-working the same problem several times for them. This is a very rewarding endeavor for me because it allows me to communicate with people from different walks of life. I have learned so much about other cultures from the students that I tutor. I have even formed some lasting friendships with former tutees.

I also serve as Teacher’s Assistant in my own Calculus class. I enjoy this because I get the opportunity to spend a great deal of time with an excellent professor. This is great because I get a chance to learn so much from him. He challenges me with difficult problems to see if I can figure them out and explain why I have come to a certain answer. Both my tutoring and Teacher’s Assistant positions have allowed me to grow as a person. It has developed my interpersonal and social skills. I feel confident working with students from all ethnicities and nationalities. I have taken several other classes that require computations of numbers and I have excelled in them as well.

Mediocrity is not apart of my life. No matter what I do, I do it with passion and ambition. In my spare time I participate in an electric club that I founded along with several friends. We have many members who share our love of numbers. We spend time helping school age children awaken their love for numbers. We volunteer at local middle schools to inspire students. I also enjoy playing the piano and dancing. Since I don’t have a piano at home, I have to travel to campus to practice. Learning to play the piano was a rewarding challenge. I have competed in several recital and have placed at least third place in all of them. In addition I am a member of PTK, Chinese Club, and I am a journalist in New City Collegian (a student blog). Reading is another of my passions. I read at least on novel per week. I am a member of a book club on campus. We meet once a week to discuss the novels we are reading. I enjoy bicycling and camping with friends on weekends. Attending classes, studying, TA, and my clubs account for nearly 70 hours per week.

As a young adult, one usually faces two very difficult decisions: where to go to college and what to major in. For me, what to major in came very easily. However, the right college was difficult to decide. After looking at several colleges and universities, I was drawn to California Sate because of its mission and core values. According to information I have received, your mission is to graduate highly valued, ethical business professionals prepared to excel in a dynamic global business environment.” While your core values are to engage, execute, and excel, all of which are characteristics of my personality. I have always set goals for myself that would be challenging-consequently, I chose this university. To me a challenging goal meant that when I accomplished it I would be even more proud. I use all of my talents to the very best of my ability. To avoid complacency, I stay busy with tasks that will challenge my mind and body.

I have made many accomplishments throughout my years of education. In high school, I ranked second in my class. This task took many hours of study and devotion. I also was a member of my high school math team. I won several awards including state championship. This was a rewarding challenge because I got the opportunity to meet people from various places that had the same love of numbers that I do. Each time I competed in a competition, I found myself eager to learn more and more about numbers. I also peer tutored my classmates who were having difficulty with math. I aspire to use my skills in mathematics to solve real world problems someday. In my home country, the business world is developing at a very fast paste. I would love to be a part of such a great change in my own country. Today’s business world is run by accountants. To be able to study at this great university would be a great challenge, yet very rewarding. I know that I would have the opportunity to network with other students from around the world who have that same interests that I do.

I believe finance is the best degree to pursue in order to be successful. In the future I want to either work in a bank, venture investigation, or stock exchange. I am very analytical and I enjoy working with numbers. I am very outgoing, a characteristic that is very important when working with clients and colleagues. Just as doctors and lawyers are held in high esteem, so are finance advisors. It is my dream to work in an environment where respect and integrity are common place. This is a job that I will never grow bored with because each day is comprised of a different challenge. Many consider math as the basic tool of every business. An accountant ensures that a business is successful by determining how well the business is doing financially. In the past years, the field of accounting has changed dramatically. A person with a degree in finance has many options today. The world has a very competitive business environment, thus accountants are in great demand. Some accountants serve as management consultants, budget analysts, and financial experts. Yet others work for the public by auditing, preparing tax returns for businesses and individuals, and the list is almost endless for a person with such a degree. Having an accounting degree opens doors to several business ventures around the world. Eventually, I intend to pursue a master’s degree in accounting. This will allow me to enhance my knowledge after my undergraduate degree. Once I have obtained my degrees I intend to return to my home country and open my own business.

I am the first person in my family to attend a university in the United States. That in itself is a great accomplishment for me and my family I have maintained a GPA of 3.97 on a 4.0 scale. I am by no means the smartest student in my class, but my devotion to excellence and perseverance has enabled me to transcend students who were not as devoted as I am. I am looking forward to the transition into university life. There I will have a better opportunity of being and independent student, while yet having to work on teams. Attending a community college prior to attending a university gave me the opportunity to see what college life might be like. Here I have maintained good grades and managed my time wisely. As a result, I believe that I am now ready to attend your university. With the skills and knowledge I have gained coupled with my own diligence and hard work, I am ready encounter university life. I know that my passion and enthusiasm for knowledge will help me to become a successful student. I have demonstrated excellence in all my endeavors. All of the qualities I posses are in line with those of the university.

I am a level-headed diligent working person, who is mature enough to have a realistic outlook on life. I make a plan for everything I do in life. I feel it is very important to be prepared and have several back-up plans. I am well aware that the career choice I have chosen will be very challenging. I believe my devotion to the numbers for all of these years shows that I am truly devoted to becoming a great accountant someday. I am reliable and trustworthy. I am very competitive, yet I am a team player. I am self-motivated and hold high standards for myself. I never been a book worm, but instead I like to have a balance between my studies and my personal life. I have always had great management skills.

My choice to attend college is very important to me. I want to make a better life for myself and my future family. I want to have a job that allows me to live without depending on paycheck to paycheck. This is something that so many people have to endure. In today’s world, a high school diploma is obsolete. So many places will not even give a person the opportunity to work if they only have a high school diploma. I also wanted to experience what it was like to live on a college campus. Although I want to succeed, I don’t want to spend my entire college experience with my head in a book. College is one of the most important factors that shape a person’s life. Obtaining a college degree has had a great impact on the choices I have made in life. A college education opens so many doors of opportunities for a person. People with college degrees are hired quicker and paid more money than people without college degrees. The unemployment registry is filled with people who have no college degree.

The college experience assists persons with obtaining the skills to get a great job. Some colleges even assist their students in their job searching endeavors. All of these tools would not be available to a person who has not gone to college. College experience can also help people to mature. When a person is at home they have a certain level of comfort and stability. Usually, in high schools students are awaken by the parents, breakfast and dinner is fixed for them, and they are even reminded to complete homework assignments and big projects. However, when a person goes off to college they must develop a certain level of responsibility. They must learn to prioritize their time in order to have fun and maintain good grades. They must remember to complete projects on time as well as getting up on their own. When a person is the first in their family to attend college, they are paving the way and setting standards for generations to come.

Going to college is so important to me; I believe a student should do whatever is possible to shape his/her future. What a person does today can have a great impact on his life in the future. Obtaining a college education is going is the groundwork for me to live a long, happy, successful life. Someday I plan to get married and have a family. By having a good job that provides a lucrative income, I am lessoning my chances of ended up in divorce. Fifty percent of couple married today end up going through a divorce. The number one reason why couples divorce is related to money issues. The stress of marriage and family is difficult enough, but when coupled with the uncertainty of being able to provide for a family and children make it even more difficult. As a result, going to college and majoring in finance will be the foundation of my future life.
