American Dream, Speech Example

America is the land of dreams because here one’s fate in life is not determined at birth but by his own actions. Here your family background, race, or nationality doesn’t define you but what you do with your life. American dream is so ingrained into American history and culture that one of the phrases in the Declaration of Independence was “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”. Our forefathers wanted to create a country where dreams are envisioned and realized.

While hard work is a necessary requirement for achieving the American Dream, it is not a sufficient condition. Even more important thing is never to give up because the road to success is often filled with disappointments and uncertainties. This is why the definition of failure is different in America than other countries. Other cultures define failure as falling short of expectations but in America failure is defined as giving up and as long as one doesn’t give up, his American Dream is always within reach.

You do not have to go very far back in history to find Americans whose lives personify the American Dream. Steve Jobs was ousted from the very company he co-founded but the best thing he did in his life was not to give up. He didn’t only return to Apple but made it the most admired company in the world. One wonders if the story of Steve Jobs life would have been as beautiful as it turned out to be if it were not for the disappointments in his life.

American Dream may be difficult but that’s what makes it so appealing. It is always within our reach but we have to prove we deserve it. Life tests us in different ways but mostly it is really testing the strength of our will and how much we value the dream we are pursuing.
