Introduction
Many people have not realized the importance and benefits of the bicycle. A bicycle is the most convenient and cheap mode of transport globally. A bicycle does not require any fuel for its motion. The only expense one may incur on the bicycle is repair and maintenance, hence rated as the most economical mode of transport. It does not cause any kind of pollution on the environment like the other modes of transport. The bicycle does not cause any traffic problems or congestion on the roads and neither does it require speed governor to regulate its speed like other vehicles. In addition, the bicycle is the easiest and the best way to exercise for body fitness and prevention of diseases. Bicycle is the best mode of transport in China especially in the universities. Many students in the university do not use any other mode of transport but the bicycle. In the Universities, the bicycle users are considered and thus the parking places for the bicycles are reserved.
I have done a great research on this topic and I have some experience in using the bicycle. This enables me to understand the topic on benefits of a bicycle as compared to other modes of transport. I will interpret this topic by featuring on the disadvantages of a car, cycling in universities in China and USA, and health benefits of cycling.
Disadvantages of a Car
Cars have many disadvantages when used on roads as compared to bicycles. Cars and motor vehicle of all kinds are responsible for about 34% emission of lethal nitrogen dioxide to the atmosphere. Nitrogen dioxide causes acid rain, which encourages algae growth and soot. Cars also emit about 50% of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere, which cause difficulties in breathing, nausea, and even death. The runoff of chemicals, oil, automotive fluids, and brake dust from cars pollutes water. In addition, leaking pumps in petrol stations contaminates ground water. For example, in United States there are about 250 million vehicles, which is a major factor of noise pollution. About 25% of the scrapped vehicles are not recycled leading to solid waste.
More has been done to make the cars safe in transport but still they are very dangerous to use in transport than other modes like bicycles. According to research and analysis done, it has been reported that cars kill nearly 40000 people in every year in a car crash.
Cycling in the University (China and USA)
In China, many people use bicycles because it is the cheapest and most convenient mode of transport. Bicycles are used to deliver messages to different places in China. This has influenced institutions like Universities to consider setting parking places for bicycles because most of their students prefer using bicycles as a mode of transport to the university. This is according culture that most people are using bicycles in China. This is because when compared to United States where even school going children park their cars outside the school. It is evident by the study that about 99% of the students use vehicles when going to schools in Indiana University. In addition, in Wayne state University, about 98% of the students have personal cars.
Health Benefits of Cycling
Cycling does not cause any kind of pollution to the environment. Other motor vehicles and not bicycles cause air, water, and soil pollution all. Therefore does not cause any health problem to the riders. Cycling is the easiest way to do some exercises. This is because you can use a bicycle to travel to anywhere without spending as long as one is able to ride. Cycling has made many people quit other types of sporting because they can get the exercise during riding when going to school or work. In addition, they quit sports because they do not have time for sports as they exercise when they are riding. Cycling helps in reducing calories, which are harmful to the body when they are beyond certain limits. It has been proved that cycling burns approximately 300 calories per hour when riding. Cycling at least 20 miles in every week helps to reduce coronary heart disease by 50%.
Conclusion
Cycling does not cause any kind of pollution to the environment, and it is considered as the best mode of transport to be used. It does not cause any traffic problems on the roads like other modes of transport. It helps the body in reducing calories and fats, which lead to other infections when they are beyond certain limits. Bicycles are used in sports competition, and the winners are awarded presents for their participation.
