Introduction
(1)What else do you think as a registered nurse can be done to enhance nursing practice in the twenty-first century? (2)Every nurse by now must acknowledge that nursing practice has rapidly moved from philosophical assumptions, into theoretical applications and now evidence based practice. (3) What was this journey like? Some of us already know that the production of evidence- based practice requires extensive research. It is time consuming as well as costly. Evidence-based practice entails professionals using their expertise in conducting studies to benefit nursing practice. (4) Of what use is evidence based practice to the profession if no guideline exists for it accurate translation to practice?
Body
- There are a number of interventions that can be created to enhance nursing practice by nurses functions in the twenty-first century. If someone thoroughly examines the most important factors influencing improvements in the quality of nursing care evidence-based practice would top that list. Why is this so?
- No longer is nursing practice linked to philosophy, which relies on non-scientific applications. Nursing is now a science. However, many theories are being replaced since the dynamics of nursing science caused them to become obsolete. Modern nursing practice functions based on extended studies. These studies investigate the most effective strategies/techniques for intervening in disease conditions. Among these diseases are the most prevalent conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, prevention of surgical infections and communicable disease interventions (Melnyk, 2011).
- Discovering the best practices does not occur from a single research study, but entails a long process, investment of time, expertise and money. First, is cultivating a spirit of inquiry or deep desire of knowing. My nurses have a desire of knowing more about a disease condition they embrace on a clinical setting. Engaging in research facilitates finding out. Next is asking that clinical question, perhaps, embodying a PICOT model. The third phase is searching and collecting appropriate data on the issue. Fourth is clinical appraisal of data providing the evidence. Fifth, sixth, seventh phases involve integrating the evidence produced from data; evaluating outcomes and sharing them
(Loyd, 2008).
- After investing so many resources on research, of want use it is to nursing science if nurses do not use the evidence or know how to apply it effectively to their practice. In the same way as research has definite steps there is a protocol facilitating implementation (Majid, 2011).
Conclusion
Now that we know about best practices that can be implemented to effectively manage disease conditions challenging nursing science, it is time that all nurses become accountable for following the guideline. These protocols go beyond enhancing the science itself, but patient outcomes and improve healthcare quality. Quality improvement is essential to nursing science. This is the reason for expending huge sums of money on research, exerting valuable resources in gathering data that produce accurate evidence. This evidence must be implemented on a daily basis.
Take the time to influence nursing managers towards implementing all recent evidence-based practices available in your clinical setting. If everyone listening to my voice becomes actively engaged in this evidence –based practice implementation advancement how much better outcomes will be realized. Patient safety would be greatly enhanced and fewer medical malpractice insurances will be needed to practice in the profession. Follow evidence-based nursing protocols and have best practices implemented in your organization.
