Personal Statement

One of the greatest realizations by early management researchers was that people are not just factors of production but also have human needs that need to be taken care of. While almost every business school teaches management theories, the lessons learned are not always applied in the real world. I speak it from my personal experiences as someone who has eight years experience in Corporate America and is currently a Vice President of International Vogue for the Midwest region. This is why I am interested in pursuing an education in Industrial Psychology so that I am better able to understand those with whom I work and may also help other organizations to have a more satisfied and loyal workforce.

Globalization has diminished geographical boundaries and the result has been a tremendous growth in competitive intensity. Feeling the pressure, the managers have started focusing too much on the accomplishment of performance targets and have even modified the compensation packages to make them more performance-oriented. The result has been that the employees have been pushed to their limits and work has overtaken their entire lives. They may be spending more time on work but their average productivity has been declining because their other needs are being ignored. I have personally witnessed workers developing alcohol and drug addiction because managers fail to notice the stressful work environment. Even when they communicate with their subordinates, they fail to understand what their subordinates need or what may be causing a decline in job performance. Problems cannot be solved until their root causes are properly understood and dealt with. This is why I want to pursue Industrial Psychology because it will also complement my strengths that include strong communication and people skills.

I am opting for the online program because this will allow me to pursue my degree without disrupting my work. It will also ensure that not only I am introduced to the latest academic research in Industrial Psychology but also stay in touch with the emerging human resource issues and trends in Corporate America.
