Imagine being in agonizing pain in your hospital bed or trying to shed some pounds that have hindered your normal activity, and there is no treatment that helps relieve this pain. Imagine being confined in a psychiatric hospital with severe mental health disorders or struggling to stop alcohol addiction, but no therapy seems to work. Being marred by the sense of helplessness, but back in your mind, you have the idea that there is one treatment that you are yet to try, and it has been proven to be effective, but unfortunately, the treatment is illegal.
What if every person within the United States would have access to a proven treatment that can take away chronic pain, manage weight, treat mental conditions and fight alcohol addictions with few side effects? Marijuana provides the answer to all these questions, and I seek to outline how marijuana is good for you and why we should follow Canada’s footsteps allowing its recreational use.
Marijuana use has proven to be successful in relieving chronic pain compared to other alternative methods in place. According to Vulfsons, Minerbi & Sahar (2020), hundreds of chemical compounds in marijuana, most of which are cannabinoids, are vital in relieving chronic pain, affecting thousands of Americans, especially those suffering from terminal illnesses. Marijuana use is further important in fighting off cancer, a disease that has debilitated thousands of Americans, leaving them reeling in endless pain. Vulfsons, Minerbi & Sahar (2020) assert, the early use of marijuana has been associated with stopping the growth of some cancer cells; thus, we can term this drug as a vaccine that puts away this monster.
Marijuana has also been linked with the possibility of controlling a healthy weight among its users. Since most Americans strive to maintain a healthy weight and can go to the extent of doing strenuous exercises and taking medications to maintain a healthy weight, sometimes the results tend to be unsatisfactory. Marijuana thus presents a better alternative towards ensuring a healthy weight since it helps regulate insulin and, at the same time, manage caloric intake effectively.
Marijuana’s importance is further seen in the ability to help cope up with mental health conditions such as ADHD, depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Although pharmacological treatments and behavior therapies are mostly used to manage the conditions, the side effects linked to the treatments and inefficiencies of therapies render marijuana the best alternative. Marijuana use offers a brilliant, risk-free, and innovative way of battling alcohol addiction as well. Marijuana can control the withdrawal symptoms associated with people trying to get away from addiction.
Although critics have argued that easy access to marijuana can lead to overdoses and even death, I argue that marijuana is one of the safest drugs when compared to the opioids mostly used in hospitals. According to Shover et al. (2019), there has never been a single death that has been linked to marijuana overdose, and they even propose the use of marijuana as an alternative to opioids.
It is evident that there is a great potential of alleviating pain and providing comfort to Americans who are in chronic pain or suffering from mental health issues. It is thus time to make marijuana available to everyone to help Americans live their lives free from any form of pain.
