PSCH Work Description, Admission Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 600

Admission Essay

I work at New York-based PSCH which strives to help individuals with developmental, psychological, and behavioral disabilities to take back the control of their lives and set meaningful goals. PSCH provides a range of services including day treatment, residential therapeutic, rehabilitation, educational, vocational and social services. My work at PSCH includes total care for the clients including personal care, assistance with clothing and meals, social integration, social activities, and assistance with reading and writing. In addition, PSCH management also encourages us to take leadership position and go beyond our formal responsibilities to meet the needs of the clients. Another thing I love about PSCH is that the management actively seeks feedback from employees including me and encourages us to provide suggestions for improvement. In addition, the employees also have great working relationship with each other and do everything they can to make each other’s job easier.

The job has enabled me to learn numerous skills that will be valuable for me as a nurse. First of all, the job has taught me patience and valuable people skills. The clients at PSCH are often difficult and they are often unable to express their needs. So it is my job to make sure I show patience no matter how difficult the client may be and in addition, I am always monitoring the clients to identify their needs and make them comfortable.

The job has also allowed me to strengthen my leadership skills. Some clients may have similar circumstances but there are always clients with unique background. This means that the organization’s guidelines may not have reliable suggestions to meet the needs of this particular group of clients. In such cases, I come up with customer solutions that often require detailed communication with the clients’ families and caregivers.

Another skill I have learnt at PSCH is time management. PSCH has limited resources and the clients seeking services often exceed the resources of the organization. In order to ensure that I am able to provide service to as many clients as possible, I carefully plan my schedule because I cannot let volume affect the quality of my work. Thus, the job is really fast paced and one has to be mentally strong to work effectively in an environment where resources are limited and clients’ often have unique deeds and sometimes quite difficult personalities.

I also take part in fund-raising events which requires interaction with the public and explaining them the mission and goals of PSCH. Fund-raising events involve marketing among other things and has taught me valuable public relation skills. PSCH’s goals requires lot more resources than the organization has, thus, the only way to ensure PSCH continues to provide valuable services to the society is by strengthening community support of our programs.

I have also become more compassionate due to my work at PSCH and admire the courage of the clients to deal with their challenges. I communicate with my patients with an open mind and try to put myself in their shoes. This allows me to become more open-minded and sympathetic to others’ problems. Because I try to understand others and listen attentively, it helps me build rapport with my clients and they also try to make my job easier. This shows that respect is a two-way relationship and people cooperate when they believe you understand them and genuinely care about them.

PSCH may be a difficult job but I truly value it because it forces me to realize my potential. The job has allowed me to learn people skills, communication skills, and time management skills which are all important to stay competitive in the healthcare profession.
