Company Abstract

Safe Haven for the Children of Brooklyn (SHCB) is a place where children who are experiencing abuse by parents or guardians can come to get away from the real-life realities of their home lives. These children need this more than anything, especially at young ages where they are just learning who they are and what they want to become. According to the Children’s Home Society, there are many benefits of a safe haven including “trauma experienced by child is reduced; offender accountability is increased, professionals have access to specialized training and MDT support; false allegations are dealt with quickly and efficiently; professionally trained staff” (1). Therefore, these children need all of this if they are experiencing child abuse and should be able to receive it from somewhere. This program is specifically implemented in order to help children that suffer from child abuse. We, at SHCB, believe that all children deserve a life of happiness. Unfortunately, they are not receiving this at home. Therefore, we want to come together to give these children a place where they can play, learn to be themselves, discover themselves, and advocate against child abuse. We want to instill in them positivity, encouragement, empowerment, guidance, and love. The general population that will be served at SHCB are children that are being physically, sexually, or emotionally abused in the Brooklyn area. The goals and objectives for the organization include providing a safe environment for children of abuse with its caring staff, psychologists, volunteers, and community; implementing educational programs for the children who would like to participate that will discuss child abuse, the effects of child abuse, the prevention of child abuse, and what can be done by them to remain healthy and happy; encouraging a positive attitude in the children that attend the organization; raising awareness in reference to child abuse; and teaching the children how to be leaders, teachers, advocates, and supporters of the things in which they believe in so that they may achieve more from their lives. The staff at SHCB will consist of me (Program Director), 2 clinical psychologists, 2 medical doctors, 1 health and fitness trainer, 2 Professors of Human Services and Child Protection, and many volunteers. In order to help maintain this program and get it up and running, I estimate that I will need $500,000 each year. This may or may not be a lot of money; however, it will provide for a better and brighter future for all children that face abuse every day.

Statement of Need

Safe Haven for the Children of Brooklyn (SHCB) is a place where children who are experiencing abuse by parents or guardians can come to get away from the real-life realities of their home lives. There are too many children being abused in our society today. According to the article entitled “Applying Public Health Model to Prevent Child Abuse,” there were 17 recently admitted children admitted to Hillsides, “a multi-service agency for severely abused, abandoned or neglected children and their families, 15 were born to mothers addicted to drugs at the time of their births and 10 experienced both severe physical and repeated sexual abuse” (1). With this being said, we can clearly see that there are too many children being abused. These children need this more than anything, especially at young ages where they are just learning who they are and what they want to become. Over 2.9 million incidents of child abuse were reported in 1998. 903,000 of these were confirmed as victims of child maltreatment according to the Children’s Defense Fund. (“Applying Public Health Model to Prevent Child Abuse, 1). We multiply this number and of course, the number gets larger. This leads to children learning that abuse and violence is a normal thing. In turn, they will grow up believing that they are supposed to do this to their children and the cycle continues. These children are in major need of a place where they can understand that it is not right, it is not the norm, and it can all be prevented. SHCB can provide this for them. However, they have to have a place to go in order to learn the fundamentals of what they are going through, how it can be prevented, and to figure out who they want to be. This program is also put into place, as stated before, to give them a safe place to go when things get worse. They will know that they have a place of solitude where they can escape and be a child. This program will serve the child population and families (if wanted) of those that are being abused. It will focus on preparing the child mentally, emotionally, and physically for the real world free of abuse. This organization believes that we, as a community at large, can prevent child abuse and will be focused specifically on that as well as the personal well-being of the abused child.

Program Description

This program is specifically implemented in order to help children that suffer from child abuse. We, at SHCB, believe that all children deserve a life of happiness. Unfortunately, they are not receiving this at home. Therefore, we want to come together to give these children a place where they can play, learn to be themselves, discover themselves, and advocate against child abuse. We want to instill in them positivity, encouragement, empowerment, guidance, and love. Our main goal is to show them that there is somebody out there that cares for them and is rooting for them. The program is designed to let them play, get to know others, develop good self-esteem, teach them to be advocates, and guide them through the processes of life even through all of their difficulties. The program will be implemented in a variety of ways. Our psychologists will provide individual and group sessions for the children who want to participate. At this point, they will be able to talk about the things that they feel and the things going on in their lives. This is not mandatory as some children are not ready for this part of the program. Our fitness trainer will work with the children who are interested in playing sports and get them out in the community playing the sport of their choice in order to instill in them teamwork, patience, and fulfillment. Our organization will also hold fundraisers in order to teach the children fundraising skills, the importance of doing something as volunteers, and giving back to our community. These fundraisers will not only be used for our organization, but will also help other organizations in our community in order to teach the children that it is important to give back. Finally, we will implement advocacy programs throughout our organization in order to show the community that we are coming together to end the cycle of child abuse. Yes, some of the money earned at fundraisers will alleviate the cost of these advocate programs; however, the fundraisers will not be able to cover all the expenses. They will only be able to cover some as we are trying to reach out to the entire community. As long as all implementation is completed successfully, I believe there will be a lot accomplished within this organization. Our projected accomplishments will be raising awareness of child abuse so that it is eventually no longer happening to any child; helping these children that are experiencing it now believe in themselves, learning that what they are going through it not right, and teaching them how to advocate for the rights of all children to end abuse; helping these children live happier lives with confidence, great self-esteem, and an urgency to want to help other children who may be going through the same thing; giving these children an outlet, somewhere to go to get away from the realities of their worlds; and helping them achieve success mentally, physically, and emotionally. The organization’s accomplishments are its desired outcomes. If we can do all of these things, we know that we have done our job and that we are changing the lives of children everywhere. That is what we want. We want to change lives for the better, educate others, and prevent child abuse from happening to any other children. No more child abuse is our desired outcome.

Goals and Objectives

The goals and objectives of SHCB are quite straight forward. The goals and objectives focus primarily on the children in order to provide a safe place where they can be educated.

SHCB will provide a safe environment for children of abuse with its caring staff, psychologists, volunteers, and community.
SHCB will implement educational programs for the children who would like to participate that will discuss child abuse, the effects of child abuse, the prevention of child abuse, and what can be done by them to remain healthy and happy.
SHCB will encourage a positive attitude in the children that attend the organization. It will teach them life skills, encourage them to find themselves, empower them to want to do more about the prevention of child abuse, and guide them in the right direction in reference to each of their specific needs and dreams.
SHCB will raise awareness in reference to child abuse by arranging and organizing fundraisers, community events, and rallies against child abuse while instilling specific ideas into the minds of children.
SHCB will teach the children how to be leaders, teachers, advocates, and supporters of the things in which they believe in so that they may achieve more from their lives.

Evaluation

The organization will use surveys from the community, the children, the staff, and the volunteers in reference to evaluating the effectiveness of the program. Surveys are the best way to judge the effectiveness of a program such as SHCB due to the fact that it allows the organization to see where it has been, where it is at the current time, and where it is going. These surveys will allow each respondent to rate specific elements of the organizations programs such as mental health, psychical health, and emotional health of the children; advocacy programs; fundraising concepts; and much more. The surveys will also allow the respondents to give feedback on what the organization is doing well, what needs improvements, and what should be changed altogether. Finally, the surveys will be used to rate the overall importance of the program as well as the general effectiveness. The surveys are there for feedback and advice as well as a means for the organization to do better at the things it is already doing or could be doing.

Staff, Personnel and Volunteer Information

The staff at SHCB will consist of me (Program Director), 2 clinical psychologists, 2 medical doctors, 1 health and fitness trainer, 2 Professors of Human Services and Child Protection, and many volunteers. I, as the Program Director, am qualified in the field of Human Services/Social Work. I have completed intense research throughout my degrees in the area of child abuse and child neglect. I also spend much of my time researching and analyzing abused children, their families, and their needs. I have a vast knowledge of expertise in the field of Human Services/Social Work that I plan to use to implement my ideas for the program. The 3 clinical psychologists working at SHCB all have degrees (Masters or Higher) in Clinical Psychology with concentrations in child abuse and neglect. They will be responsible for assisting the children in interviews, sessions (individual and group), and evaluating their progress from day one. There are 2 medical doctors on my team. One is a certified Pediatrician while the other is a General Physician that focuses on many different aspects of the medical field. These doctors will be on campus in order to provide medical assistance to the children in the case of illnesses, falls, evaluations, check-ups, and any other medical conditions that may arise while the children are in the organization’s care. I have also brought in a health and fitness trainer to work with the children who are interested in staying active and participating in community sports. The health and fitness trainer is certified in his field and has done specific research in relation to children. His concentration was in Child Sports. I believe he is an essential part of our team as he is there to provide assistance with sports and activities that will boost the children’s self-esteem and confidence. There are also 2 Professors of Human Services and Child Protection on our team for our advocacy programs, rallies, educational programs, and credibility. These 2 individuals have Masters Degrees or Ph.D.’s in the specified field and exhibit extreme longing to be part of the organization to help prevent child abuse. Finally, last but certainly not least, the volunteers of the organization are absolutely essential for this organization to run effectively. There will be an in-depth screening process for all volunteers. These volunteers will be in charge of watching the children, fundraising activities, and supporting the team in many other aspects of its daily functions. With all of these individuals playing vital roles, I can say that there should be no problem in implementing and sustaining the program. As we work together, our program can be very successful. It is all about time, money, organization, and a passion for changing the community and the world.
