Should Immigration Laws Be Stricter? Speech Example

Pages: 2

Words: 434

Speech

The fight against immigration has been an intense battle in the United States. Although immigrants bring some benefits in the country, they are also associated with negative implications. The benefits of immigration are attributed to guest worker programs which are a good source of labor. Immigrants are also associated with economic boost. The registered immigrants add to the government tax. If an illegal immigrant is caught in the country, they are charged some fees which also add the government revenue.

However, the negative side is stronger. This battle against immigration has been fueled by the need to tackle problems that are associated with illegal drugs, terrorism as well as national deficits that arises due to the presence of poor immigrants in the country. The greater percentage of the population in the United States is made up of immigrants who are projected to proliferate to over 420 million people by the end of 2050 based on the Census figures in the United States (Langford, 2004). More than 60 percent of the total immigrants are from Mexico and the population of Hispanics alone is anticipated to grow to over 100 million (Demleitner, 2002). Stricter immigration laws are warranted on account of the following facts:

  • Increased number of immigrants promotes drug trafficking, criminal activities and terrorism
  • Poorer immigrants drain government resources in terms of service provision including welfare, healthcare and education as they can hardly pay any significant taxes.
  • Immigration translated to disappearance of national language and identity which subsequently promotes divisive multiculturalism.
  • Immigrants are a disgrace to their home country because professionals, male populations and other productive workers deny the country the services that they deserve.
  • Skilled immigrants deny the less skilled Americans opportunities for employment as a result of the competition that they create (Frei, 2005).

In conclusion, the government has proposed a number of measures for addressing illegal immigration. They include giving amnesty to illegal immigrants already in the country, programs of guest workers, tighter border security, deportations and fines. Immigration therefore hurts the host country and the home country of the immigrants alike and therefore there is need for stricter laws governing it.
