Statement of Purpose, Admission Essay Example

The attainment of my Master’s degree from Florida International University will translate to me as a goal achieved, and also as a means of commencing on goals of equal meaning.  I suspect this duality is true of many seeking their Master’s, particularly in that the achievement marks the completion of years of study, and is eagerly desired as recognition of academic success.  For me, however, the significance is deeply personal as well.  No member of my family had the opportunity to graduate college at all, as the challenges of the single-parent home I knew as a child rendered such education something of a dream.  I profoundly feel that, in working towards my Master’s, I am in fact honoring that struggle.  This is an opportunity to demonstrate that learning may not be hampered by adversity, and that any faint hopes my family ever had of going so far were never unrealistic.  If the road is difficult, it is nonetheless still there, and taking my Master’s will give substance to what I believe is a vital truth.

It will also, I feel, permit me to help others find that road.  It seems to me that opportunity inherently brings with it the responsibility to give back in some measure what has been provided, and this is a responsibility I embrace.  On one level, there is little more meaningful to me than the chance to give my son and daughter a life more open to possibilities than the childhood I knew, and my degree will certainly enable me to create this better life.  I have opened doors for myself and I value the struggles of the process.  Nonetheless, my own achievement will stand to show my children the immense value of personal progress, as it will ease our practical burdens in living.  Then, there is the arena beyond my family, and my Master’s will be a foundation, in my eyes.  Upon it, I can guide others in health care, contribute at a genuinely worthwhile level to the industry and my community, and employ it to help me reach new heights in learning myself.  All of this, and in equal measures, drives me to work towards my Master’s degree.
