The Cons of the American Dream, Speech Example

Pages: 2

Words: 581

Speech

The American dream, sounded so sweet, yet so bitter and oppressive in many ways. During its inauguration, the American dream sounded so promising and took many to their worlds of fantasies; little did they know that one day it would turn out to be their greatest misery. The story changed the moment the American citizens realized that life was growing even much harder by the day.

Despite the American dream having been in existent, many American citizens still live a life of poor health. Diseases like heart attacks, stroke and even hypertension are still prevalent among the citizens. This is very contradictive to the dream motto of good life for every American. Similarly, the American health sector is still dragging behind with insufficient healthcare access to the citizens.

Consequently, the American dream has led to many citizens piling up huge debts and not being able to pay back. Many people took loans in efforts to improving their living standards and achieving the American dream goals. However, due to inflation and other economic disparities, these individuals could not enjoy the use of their resources and use the acquired money resourcefully to fulfill their dreams. As a result, many businesses have collapsed and remained with huge financial debts that greatly weigh them down on their performance.

The labor market seems to be the largely hit institution in the economy. Many companies have relocated to new places like Canada and Mexico in the name of seeking low cost of production and market for goods and services. In the process of this relocation, many people who greatly relied on the companies for job remained jobless and their lives grew from good to worse. Similarly, the American dream led to the formation of international trade agreements like the NAFTA, which brought a number of economic defects among the American citizens. For instance, due to the low cost of production that the trade agreement brought about, most companies lacked market to sell their goods at competitive rates. Similarly, the labor market got over flooded hence making labor to lose value. The lose in labor value substantively resulted to low wages in a high class economy. This has translated into more suffering than good.

At the onset of the American dream, housing was the topmost aspect that the American citizens were to enjoy. This took a different turn when the cost of mortgage went up and many people left unable to comfortably afford decent housing. Inflation within the American economy has largely led to the high cost of housing and many people cannot afford permanent housing. The cost of financing mortgages has equally gone high and many people are afraid of taking housing loans because the economy is unpredictable. As a result, the dream seems to have made their lives even worse than it initially were.

Conclusively, the American dream seems to have favored the high class Americans leaving the poor to drag behind in oppression. The dream set high standards of living for Americans to a level that only a few could afford. The low class is therefore left to work hard to fill the economic gap left behind by their high class cohorts. The toil is hard but brings no satisfaction; many Americans still live in their agony and their lives completely a struggle. This is a wakeup call to the Americans, to stay vigilant and observe the American dream in every aspect; otherwise, the American dream will turn out to be the greatest nightmare the nation has ever experienced.
