Companies constantly strive to maintain a good reputation in the global market by adhering to proper leadership and employee approaches. However, Cerner Corp has been facing challenges with its employees’ workability and the managers’ ability to control the actions of the junior employees. To curb the issues, the CEO, Mr. Patterson, angrily emailed the managers threatening to sack them for failing to effectively manage the employees and steer the company in the right direction. The email sent by the CEO was offensive and did not adhere to the communication strategies.
The CEO failed to communicate with the company employees to understand their employees’ concerns and did not provide room for feedback generation. The email also was unable to develop the concerns of the CEO as he was generally focused on threatening the managers due to poor adherence to the employees. From the email sent, the CEO failed to incorporate the company’s approaches to establishing better operational methods and how the employees would promote their workmanship to ensure the company achieved its stock target. Moreover, Mr. Patterson did not present his concerns in a clear message, leading to the failure to understand what might have led to his uncontrolled anger toward the managers. Mr. Patterson failed to consider the directive’s impact on the managers and junior employees. He should have communicated effectively and reasonably to reflect the company’s needs. The communication did not also present better approaches to ensure the company reached its stock target and how the employees would develop better working measures to boost productivity. Therefore, Mr. Patterson failed to incorporate adequate communication strategies in his concern to curb the low productivity of the company’s employees.
As a communication consultant, there are various approaches that I would advise Mr. Patterson to incorporate in the memo to develop better relationships with the employees in his company and ensure they adhere to the company regulations. Mr. Patterson should provide a clear communication pattern with the employees to ensure fewer misunderstandings and confusion. Through clear communication, the message will be delivered with its intention and minimize the issues with the employees. Clear communication also concentrates on the CEO’s plan and vision for the employees. Therefore, the memo should include reasons for restructuring the company rules, and therefore, there should be a provision of crucial information regarding the expectation of the employees. Mr. Patterson should also ensure consistent communication of its strategies to ensure the employees know their expectations and focus on acknowledging better communication channels. There will be an improved relationship and communication in the company through the act. The CEO can present his concerns to the managers who will deal with the junior employees. Through consistent communication, there will be an improved reception of feedback hence the precise handling of issues related to the company. THEREFORE, the CEO should curb the urge to email the managers but wait for the employees to take action on the presented propositions.
Mr. Patterson should embrace the art of active listening in his company leadership, where there can be a forum for exchanging ideas and reflecting on the issues affecting the employees. The CEO should consider the complaints from the employees rather than inflicting his own rules as an effective way of running the company. From active listening, appropriate feedback is achieved, and the employees may understand why necessary changes are being implemented. The implementation of the changes should be focused on the feedback presented from the employees to create a healthy working environment and better relationships with those in leadership positions. Through active listening, the CEO can understand the needs of employees and ensure that their needs are heard and handled equally. Moreover, the employees should be provided with a forum where they can raise questions and be given clarification on various issues to build on a better understanding and adherence to messages. Additionally, Mr. Patterson should understand the preferred communication mediums suitable for the employees and incorporate information that does not affect their attitude towards work. By determining the preferred communication mediums, there can be better collaboration between employees, managers, and the CEO. The employees can gain an approach where they can effectively craft their responses to various things. Moreover, the managers can represent the concerns of the employees by approaching the CEO and devising better approaches that will boost the company’s workability and productivity in the global market. Therefore, the employees can adjust to the needs of the company’s management and be able to work in a conducive environment.
To conclude, effective communication strategies should be employed in devising changes in a company. The CEOs should be in the lead to ensure a conducive working environment by providing the employees are professionally approached and concerns raised in a civilized manner. Mr. Patterson emailed the managers with anger rather than listening to their opinions and developing better mediums for ensuring the company’s productivity through proper communication channels and practical address of various issues. Therefore, there is a need to incorporate positive communication strategies in the running of a company to boost its position globally and attract more customers in the target market.
